I have no experience with this but it is a frequent nightmare of mine as I can't bear the thought of anything happening to either of my two. I wish Nat and your sister the best of luck and assure you that me and my partner will be thinking of you all. I sincerely hope it all goes well.

Sorry I also meant to say, not all dogs get any external lumps with tumours, neither of my boys did. But if they ever get any lameness (unless they are young dogs, it tends to affect them at 6 +) don't hesitate to ask your vet to xray them. Early diagnosis gives them the best chance. Trouble is although greyhounds are such wimps and do the scream of death for the least little thing at times, when it comes to real pain they can be amazingly stoic which does make diagnosis sometimes difficult

I hope the surgery all goes well and please tell your sister we're thinking of her and Nat.
I agree totally with Sam about the stoicism of greyhounds and both of our bone cancer dogs never made a sound when they were being examined or even when they were in extreme pain from the cancer. When any of our dogs run or play and then hold a leg up or come back limping we always know that if they give a good old greyhound scream all we need to do is give them a hug, wiggle the poorly leg about a bit and lo and behold they're right as rain and skip off to play again! When they've come back limping or in Ernie's case after he dislocated his toe and ruptured the ligaments so the bone was sticking right out he didn't make a sound so we knew it was time for an emegency trip to the vet!!
Good luck and please let us know how Nat gets on.
Sian

Wishing Nat a very speedy recovery and hope that all is well.
I hope you don't feel that this is in bad taste, but I thought this is probably the best thread to put it in.
Please do this if you have suitable hounds, I've just contacted Mike by phone and he's sending me out 2 swab packs for Ginty and Abbie. The Animal Health Trust are looking for Greyhounds that either have osteosarcoma (bone cancer), or are aged 7-years or older and free of the disease. This is to help with their research into preventing/treating this cancer. They will send you a swab to swab inside your dog's mouth to collect cheek cells and return to them. Please email: mike.starkey@aht.org.uk or Tel: 01638 555603
Its only for pure greyhounds, and this is the reason why 'The nature of our research involves getting DNA from healthy dogs over the age of 7, because if they make it to this age they are less likely to get Cancer due to a genetic mutation. We compare this DNA to that of dogs affected by cancer – which can be any age. We are then looking for a difference in the genetic code between the two cohorts (healthy v affected) Due to this comparism of DNA we need samples from pure breeds. If we added dogs that were cross breeds into the mix it could throw up untrue results, as the genes wouldn’t match due to the other breeds in there.'
Big hugs and kisses to Nat xx

Oh no, I hope he'll feel better on the drip. Does this mean his surgery might be postponed? Fingers and paws crossed that this is just a minor glitch and he'll be ok. We're keeping him and his family in our thoughts and I can imagine how worried hs mum must be feeling tonight. Please keep us updated. Lots of hugs to you all. Sian x
