Hi, I've had my greyhound 6 weeks ago and recently she's started jumping up on the work surfaces in the kitchen + taking stuff off. Monday she chewed a wooden spoon up + tonight I'd left some tinfoil on side after I'd been cooking + forgot to put it in the bin + she's had that down while we were upstairs + eaten it! Just wondered if anyone had any ideas to stop her jumping up? I guess it doesn't help they're so tall its easy to jump up + look around!

All I can suggest is don't leave anything within reach! Our first greyhound was the biggest counter surfer and had allsorts (and I mean allsorts!) He even ate half our grill pan handle and the ignition button on the hob He still did it at 12 years old. None of mine here with us now do although Willow (who is 12 now) used to get her paws up and lick any plates given half a chance. Good luck, never a dull moment. One thing I will say is if you have any cooked chicken, corn on the cobs or other meat with bones in, wrap them up and put them into the outside bin straight away as they can cause real problems if stolen.

Jet tried that once, was firmly told no and has never done it since........ however he has been known to steal treats from people's pockets and other dogs' mouths! If they are prone to counter surf it can be difficult to stop-totally agree with Sue that you just have to be vigilant about leaving stuff out.

Hello and welcome to Gap. Similar reply really. I had to always make sure things were put away with my Cas and I always put things that could hurt them straight into the outside bin. Cas was a dab hand at opening the sink door and getting to the bins within.

I think the only answer is not to leave anything out .... sighthounds steal! Lurchers are probably the worst ... one of ours once took a chop from under the grill (that was on at the time) many a wooden spoon has been chewed, one still would given the chance .... it's what they do!

Lol! I had a foster whippet called Katie a.Few years ago along with my Lurcher and Whippey boy - when the three of them were together they loved jumping up on the sides. One day Steve and I were eating our tea when my Whipppy boy jumped onto the dining table along with Katie and started to eat my food off my plate right in front of me! They are cheeky little monkeys aren't they! Xxx

To ensure my four never go into the kitchen I have placed a baby gate across the doorway. Obviously I have to remember to shut it when I am either in or out of the kitchen.

Counter surfing goes hand in hand (or should that be paw in paw) with bin diving! Put everything away, keep the door closed or use a babygate.

Thanks for your replies. Our old dog was a lab x staffie so was too small to jump up so at least now we know about her doing it got to make sure we remenber to be carefull!! She is kept in the kitchen while we're out in the day. Was panicking about the foil she'd eaten but my vet said it normally passes ok + she's quite happy asleep on the sofa at mo.x

Liz none of the lurchers here have ever counter surfed, Andy was the king of stealing, he stole food directly from the bbq, burgers, sausages down in one red hot! We were caravanning one weekend and Mark had put a huge piece of steak on, never laughed so much seeing an elderly greyhound and Mark having a tug of war with a piece of meat He also once grabbed a link of sausages as I took them from a pack, it was like something out of Tom and Jerry me chasing him round to get them off him God I miss that dog so much he was fab!

Sorry but can't help but laugh.....Katy has had a steak out of the frying pan once Sibs once had a chicken satay still on the skewer we gave her some balled up pieces of bread and kept a very careful eye on her - the skewer passed intact a few days later

Brooke doesn't counter surf but when she first came I thought it was funny the cats suddenly ate all their dried food during the day - they had a bowl at the back of the worktop - then I caught Brooke pulling the bowl towards her with her paw, eating the food then pushing the empty dish back with her nose - wouldn't have believed it until I saw it with my own eyes!

I think most of have experienced this. Gracie managed to drag a pot bread crock off the worktop and steal the contents. We have the clearest worktops! I believe the best way to discourage it is to take the reward away, don't leave anything they can get hold of. The microwave makes a good food safe for things defrosting or cooling down as does our windowsill. Everyone's got a funny story - or several - about thieving dogs as you can tell

My other lurcher was a counter surfer and broke into every bin we ever had and we tried loads of different styles but she conquered them all so had to leave the bin outside in the end,we just had to treat her as if shwe was a child and think ahead and take any temptations out of the way,my new boy Moss does not do this but he does like to pull the duvet to bits and shred dropped tissues., our old staffie is the thief with food,OH left a sandwich on the table to answer the phone and it magically dissapeared so they all get up to their little tricks.
