We have a counter surfer here called Dulcie I have tried various things to stop her including a loud corrector spray which frightens the whole household but not her so after two years we have learnt to clear the workshop before she does she still steals random things and takes them to her crate she even takes things out of the sink the list is endless so good luck with yours

I think the only answer is not to leave anything out .... sighthounds steal! Lurchers are probably the worst ... one of ours once took a chop from under the grill (that was on at the time) many a wooden spoon has been chewed, one still would given the chance .... it's what they do! Liz none of the lurchers here have ever counter surfed, Andy was the king of stealing, he stole food directly from the bbq, burgers, sausages down in one red hot! We were caravanning one weekend and Mark had put a huge piece of steak on, never laughed so much seeing an elderly greyhound and Mark having a tug of war with a piece of meat He also once grabbed a link of sausages as I took them from a pack, it was like something out of Tom and Jerry me chasing him round to get them off him God I miss that dog so much he was fab! You're welcome to borrow a few theiving lurchers, Sue The 3 greyhounds I've had here did not steal, hence my opinion on lurchers, of which many have been norty little theives but very much loved!

Utensils will also be stolen if left unattended See photographic evidence below I was amazed that she had managed to turn around and go to sleep without knocking it off the edge of the chair

Ours love cooking utensils too I think the only answer is a strict no food on unattended worktops policy and a baby gate to keep them out at times when there is. Welcome to the world of tidy kitchens! We bought a great dog proof bin, cost £70 but has been worth every penny!

When Lola first arrived constant vigilance whenever there was food left out and a firm NO stopped her from going front-paws-up. We were warned that Reggie had been taught to counter-surf by another rescue (Nonnie?) in his foster home. He had the same treatment as Lola and that has worked too..... eventually! The last attempt was a few months ago - half a tub of margarine when our vigilance lapsed! Maybe it was that which finally put him off? Watching him snoozing with Lola now, butter wouldn't melt in his mouth and he's lost the taste for margarine!

Yep nonnie taught reggie to counter surf, nonnie didn't just put her paws on the counters she jumped onto the counters and would even lie on them. We do not leave any food unattended on the counters jasper wouldn't dream of counter surfing but the girls would give it a go.

I think Moss must have learnt how to read these posts as he has just stolen some toast off my OH's breakfast tray right in front of us and then ran and hid behind his Mum!

All this reminds me of our 1st grey Tillie.Ace counter surfer - she left me with an unforgetable Xmas day.Still don't know why Chris decided to empty the kitchen bin but not take it out.He was on an early shift and I had the luxury for snoozing a bit longer - woke up to find she'd ripped the bin bag open and eaten half of my unwanted birthday cake!Had the face on cos her tummy was too full for Xmas dinner.Got her own back - didn't realise DIL had put cheesecakes on the sideboard.Turned our back for a minute - 1 cheesecake gone in a second and 1 very smug grey.Cath

Oh well I was going on about how Moss was not like my other lurcher,WRONG!!! I think after having him for nearly a year he has finally realised that he is indeed a LURCHER, he has been trying the bin, pinching stuff, running round the garden with a plastic soup carton in his mouth and throwing it into the air not chewing it though, playing his mate Skye up in a nice way, digging holes in the lawn and what a Gob on him he has certainly found his bark, all in all he is every bit a normal mad hound, and I am so happy that my boy has finally come out, what a difference to a year ago,so welcome to the world of the counter surfer be they greyhound or lurcher.

Poppy is the evil queen of greyhound thievery; infamously these include a leg of lamb from a pensioners shopping basket and photographic evidence in the village news of the stolen toy duck:( last night she stole a pack of butter and is now suffering the after effects luckily I love her
