Well after a day of worrying the vet left a message last night to say the surgery hasn't gone ahead as the surgeon had had an emergency to deal with, and as burton was stable the surgery would now be done on Thursday. As its taking longer though, they are letting us vist him later today as it will now be at least next week til he can come home x

Thank you, we are seeing him at half 5 can't wait! Although wont want to leave him. The surgeon rang today and explained the full nature of the condition. Basically he thinks he can remove the insulinoma and will look for secondary tumours during the op but he says it is pretty much certain it will return at some point and usually will spread into the liver and lymph nodes. At that point they can only treat the symptoms. So this is treatment rather than a cure. Average prognosis is anywhere from 7 months to 3 years. This is really upsetting but hopefully we can give him some more pain free time and his symptoms can be managed. He's only 8 bless him so this makes it extra hard x

What a shame the surgery didn't go ahead as planned. I've been thinking of Burton all day and had hoped he'd be recovering by now. I hope you had a good visit with him today though and we'll be keeping everything crossed for tomorrow. Perhaps not the best news about his condition worsening in the future but it's early days and one thing about greyhounds is that they constantly surprise us so he could easily survive those 3 years and more. I know how you feel about him being so young for such a terminal illness but unfortunately the 3 greyhounds we've lost have all been 7 or 8 so for us it's always scary when they reach that age because we just don't know what's around the corner. Our boy Ernie will be celebrating his 8th birthday at the end of this month and we're terrified but he is going to get spoilt and has already been promised a burger which he's never ever had!!! Good luck for Burton tomorrow and we'll be waiting for news. Sian x

Hi, just wondering how Burton is doing? Has he had his surgery yet? I know you're busy with a new baby but I'd love to know how he is and I've been thinking of him all week. Hope all is well. Sian x

Hiya, he had his surgery on Thursday morning. The surgeon removed the tumour from his pancreas and also secondary tumours in a lymph node and liver, he said he was able to remove all those he could see, though there may be small pieces remaining that are not visible to the eye. He is apparently recovering well and is eating a bit, and his blood glucose levels have been stable and as they should be (there was some concern he could go a bit diabetic as his pancreas hasn't been needing to make insulin cow the tumour was producing so much). The main concern today was his heart rate was quite fast but they have done an ECG and it is regular, just fast, he said it could be due to the stress or cos he's in pain so they will up his pain killers to see if that helps. He is hoping if his recovery continues and he is eating and can manage without injectable pain relief, he may be able to come home on Sunday Will be so good to have him home, he looked so sorry for himself when we visited on Wednesday and looked like he didn't recognise us

Poor lad he's really been through the mill these past ten days, I'm sure he recognised you but they do tend to shut down when they are out of sorts or have had too much going on around them once he gets home with you all and sees his sister Lola again I'm sure he'll perk right back up after a couple days of home comforts and smells, best get lots of sossies in for the lad to aid his recovery Hugs to you all Hope the hours speed past for you all to Sunday

Thanks for your good wishes everyone, our boy is now home Lola was super excited to see him! He's still v sore and sorry for himself but he was much more himself at least. We have to keep feeding him a prescription low fat food little and often for the next week to keep his blood sugar up but he's really off his food, I keep trying to hand feed him but he will only take even a little bit of chicken! I think I will probably spend the next week feeding between him and our baby! I hate thinking about what the future holds but just need to enjoy our time now and spoil him x
