For some strange reason, we've been thinking about getting decent raincoats for the hounds ;D
We've got heavier weight waterproof coats for the colder months but their lighter raincoats aren't that great. Just wondered if anyone had any recommendations?
Our two wear Ruffwear harnesses, so I'm thinking that perhaps the type of coat that goes through the front legs, then fastens round the belly would be a good idea, as they wouldn't get pulled around so much by the harness... I've seen ones by Buster, Danish Design and Hurtta but they're not specifically for greyhounds so I don't know if the fit would be right.
I've got a vague memory of someone on here posting a link to some coats that went over the harness but unfortunately I can't find it.
Any advice or thoughts would be v. gratefully received.

Thanks for the link I was actually looking at those online today and they do look fab... but it seems the lady is on maternity leave at the moment and not making any coats until later on in the year Never mind, I'm sure the perfect coats are out there somewhere... Kate x

Kitsch collars do lightweight rainmacs in their range. I haven't got any of the new style, with the belly band underneath, but I have a few of their old coats and they are very good www.kitschcollars.com/ready_to_wear_coats.htm

Just looked in more detail, and these fasten across the chest, so not sure if they're what you're looking for?

Hi Kate,
I have just sent off for a Hurta raincoat for Clive (discontinued colour, so a bargain price) he is quite big so I have had to go for 75 cm, but I do like his coats to cover his bum properly.I will let you know via this thread how we go on. It should be here by the end of the week.
Also with all of Clives coats I had the local seamstress put a buttonhole in the back of all his coats to enable me to thread the catch on his Ruffwear harness through. I find this much easier than having to fiddle adjusting the harness to suit the thickness of the coat. (also had a velcro tab put on most of the necklines to keep them in place when folded back) If you are handy with a sewing machine it would be easy to do - alas I am useless.

I have also been looking for a raincoat for Song which had a hood that doesn't blow off at the slightest breeze. The Snoogle hooded waterproof looks ideal, so I will get one ordered.
Thanks for the info ladies.

I got a really good raincoat from Voyager K9 Apparel in the USA. After the customs had finished with it the cost was astronomical though!
However it is great, made of high quality performance fabric, has a built in snood, pleats at the front so as not to restrict leg movement, and a mesh lining. I also got a light fleece called a tummy warmer which fit s under it. They can each be worn individually or together. The tummy warmer is Gizzi's most worn garment.
Worth window shopping...

Back again - just looked at the Kitsch Collars coats and the raincoat looks great - looks like lots of leg room at the front, and a high collar - not a full snood - but I'd definitely go for one of those.

Thank you so much for the links and suggestions, it's very much appreciated The Kitsch Collars raincoat is just what I was looking for, Tamsin, and if I combined that with Debbie's great idea of having a buttonhole put in, we could have a winner I'd love to hear how you get on with the Hurta coat, though, Debbie, as I really like the look of those, they're so neat. I have looked at blizzard coats, AlexandSteve, but our two tend to get hot quite quickly (I'm not sure they're actually greyhounds , despite the tattoos ) so I need something with a lighter lining. The ones from the US look great, Ritab - did the customs sting you for a lot when they came in, then? I'll report back when we've made a decision and a purchase. Having said that, though, we took our two out without coats last night, got caught in a blustery downpour and they had a lovely time pulling us around country tracks with the rain blowing against them and the wind up their tails.... typical! ;D Kate x

Hi - yes the Customs did charge a lot - they seem to stop everything now and you have to pay VAT on the goods, carriage, and customs charges.
However it's always worth looking on American websites as they have such good stuff!
I have 2 coats from AK Creations but I had to modify both of them - put pleats in the front of the "English Style" coat, and the one with the snood rubbed her skin sore at the front where all the seams joined, so I cut the spare fabric down as much as I could and then hand stitched a round piece of fleece over the area. Seems to have fixed it, but it was a bit disappointing to have to make modifications to both coats.

Hi Kate,
Hurta coat has arrived so will be putting it through its paces this weekend. The fabric and construction are great. only problem I can see is that the neck area is a bit lacking for a greyhound, but thave I seen someone chatting about waterproof snoods. In the meantime I am going to fill the neck area in with one of my running multi bandeaus which Clive has worn before in certain weathers. So its off for a trot round Marbury park in Northwich tomorrow and another walk in the rain on Sunday.
Hope to post an update on Sunday evening,
Debbie

We got the K9 apparel raincoats a few yrs ago when the exchange rate made them affordable and didn't get charged anything by customs but I suspect that was just random good luck. I've put them over any fleece/pj's we've got, didn't get the K9 ones. I love them, as good as new several years on and they're bone dry underneath. I do like the look of the Kitsch ones too.

Hi Kate, I have some pics of Clive today in the awful weather modelling the hurta coat (of which more later). I have never been able to post pics on this site so would you be ok if I sent some to your personal email if you contact me. Also the pics are on my partners computer so I would need to send them by this evening. Hope you see this. Debbie
