Hello,
Me and my fiancee are just in the process of adopting our first Greyhound (!) and of course want to sort out pet insurance.
Who ARE you with, insurance-wise?
Thanks!

Hello Bingo is with NFU mutual, under £14 a month for a really good level of cover. I've only had to claim from them once but had no trouble at all. Congratulations on your new hound

All mine are with petplan, not the cheapest but reliable I was with M&S when they first started doing pet insurance, very cheap and good cover but then they trebled their prices and it got a bit ridiculous I also had my oldie with tescos and they hiked it up from £31 a month to £54, she'd had no claims, was old but even so, that was quite a few years ago too. I was recommended to try AXA by a good source on here and it saved me a lot of money and the cover seems great although (fingers crossed) I haven't had to claim yet. I have heard reports that they may be slow to pay BUT do pay.

Welcome to the mad minefield of insurance policies ;D Definitely worth getting feedback/recommendations but I would say try to have in mind the level of cover that you want before trying to make comparisons on price/service etc. because it is totally mind-boggling We have all our greys covered on 'for life' policies with NFU....we have £4,000 per condition per year with no exclusions...whereas with a lot of policies you may have £2,000 per year and if say your dog developed a lifetime condition it would only be covered for the first year of the policy and then you would not be able to ever get cover for that existing condition We have found NFU to be excellent and because we have a lifetime policy and they have mutual bonuses the first renewal we have had went down in price for the second year (and that was after claims in excess of £4k over the year). I think others who do not have lifetime cover with them have found they hike the prices as all insurers seem to do We were previously with More Than with our first grey...they paid out fine but when our boy died before the term of the policy where we paid monthly installments, upon his death we had to pay the remaining three months of the policy up front What really shocked me is that they passed that debt to our vets I believe they now cancel the remaining part of the policy in the event of death but it really left a nasty taste in the mouth. There does seem to be some discrepancies on price depending on where in the country you live...so definitely shop around and always check to see who is underwriting any policy you take out. Good luck And I hope you have lots of fun with your new greyhound Sam x

I have just insured Zico with vetsmedicover. I know he is a lurcher and as such is a x-breed, but with this company it doesn't make a difference whether the dog is pedigree or x-breed.
The monthly premium is £18, with £10,000 per year claims limit on a cover for life policy.
All my other dogs have been, and are still insured with PetPlan, and while they have been brilliant with all claims I have made, their premiums are high, and I have an £90 excess and only £4000 per year of cover.
When Pele was taken ill with cancer, his treatment costs totalled in excess of £16,000 and I only had the cover for £8000 of that with petplan. When we started on the teatment plan, there was no way of knowing the eventual costs of his treatment, as month by month he wasn't expected to do as well as he did, and then there were unexpected complications, and once you have started on the treatment path, when your dog is responding to that treatment and doing so well, it is very hard to say you are going to stop it due to the costs involved.
I feel unsure about switching to a new insurance provider for Zico, but feel better knowing I have an extra £6000 cover available with this policy.

I changed from PetPlan to More Than only because the 'cover for life' total was £7000 rather than £4000 and Tigger spent nearly £4000 in four days at the Willows vet hospital More Than's excess is low at £70 but you also pay 10% of all treatment which I think rises to 20% at a certain age .. I personally think 'cover for life' is a must and welcome to hounds J xx

I've also just insured Bertie with vetsmedicover for £18 per month, this insurance company just covers medical bills along with £1m public liability but you don't get other cover such as being given financial help to find your dog if it gets lost etc. Its a no frills vet fees and PL insurance only which is all I really want anyway. Its a lifetime cover policy with up to £10,000 vets fees per year. They don't take on new dogs age 8 or over but if you're an existing policy holder they will cover you for the lifetime of the animal. www.vetsmedicover.co.uk/home/

We are with Animal Friends, they will cover older dogs which suited us as a lot of insurance companies won't accept dogs over 6/ 7 years of age We were with More Than & whilst they offered a great service the premiums were hiked up every renewal to the point where it was becoming unaffordable

Petplan here, not the cheapest I know but I have never had any quibbles with them over claims. They do three levels of cover for younger dogs, so choice of premiums and cover. Older dogs are limited to their basic policy, but then again I think most insurance companies limit the benefits for the oldies if they will accept them at all that is.
Just make sure the company you choose do a 'cover for life' policy and not one stops paying out after 12 months. Also when comparing remember to compare the amount of excess you are required to pay per year, and any % that's applied as they get older.

My lurcher Gypsy is with Petplan. Agree with comments as above. I've just got Hollys (xbreed) renewal through with Sainsbury underwritten by AXA, she's 13 now and I've had about £3k in claims over the last 4 years but I've not claimed in the last year, her premium is £1075! I'm not renewing.

I'm with Tesco - the one time I've had to claim they texted me they had the claim form on the Monday, and I had the cheque out in the post on the Tuesday.
