This might sound like a silly question but how often (if ever) should you bath a greyhound! We have had Mac 8 months now and he has never had or needed a bath. I am the envy of all my friends because when we are out walking he never rolls in anything and any mud that does attach itself to him quickly falls off his short fur. Unfortunately this week he was a bit sick in his bed. I didn't realise and he has been lying in it and he does now have a bit of a smell. Any advice please!!

Hiya,
Its best to not bath too much and if he doesnt need a bath then I wouldnt bother, I wouldnt bath for the sake of it. If he needs a bath due to smelling of the sick he lay in then just use a mild shampoo if you can.
Hope he is feeling better now.

I got a 'dry' shampoo from P@H, it comes out as a foam you rub in then brush or towel dry, it's ideal for patches like that or if they just need a freshen up. Furminater do a grooming spray to use before you brush them and that's great for getting rolling smells out, seems to remove it not just cover it. Ours only get put in the shower once or twice a year, Maddie probably the most as she has a lot of white on her and it gets grubby looking now and then. I find they smell more for the first few days after a shower and they loose more hair, I suppose the oil gets removed so the loose stuff then falls off all at once

I have to confess that I've never bathed Taz I groom him with a hound glove every few days. If he gets muddy I wait until he's dry then brush him off. He never seems 'dirty' and he doesn't smell. Jess only gets bathed if she rolls in something smelly

Tesse and Laz get more baths in spring/autumn... because they seem to get filthy and they like rolling in fox poo.

I've always bathed my lurchers twice a year...once the weather is warmer and again before the weather gets too cold....because I find it easier to bath them outside. I fill a trug (builders bucket) with warm water and get a big plastic jug to pour water on them. I find they never usually struggle cos they aren't actually in the water. Then they can run round the garden and roll on all the bushes to get dry ;D ;D I actually tried to bath Maddy inside last week cos her coat was looking ready for it, but she was like Bambi and I was like a drowned rat!

I never do it alone unless it really won't wait and we've got a seperate shower cubicle so I strip off and get wet then pass them on to Tony to dry while I clear up the mess ;D I also tend to do it when the bathroom's ready for a good clean anyway, not when I've just cleaned it well ;D

I never bathed Santana once in 10 years, and Teasel's never been bathed in the 4 years I've had her.... however, Merlin..... Covered in fox poo so in the shower. Me stripped off, hound in, doors closed, water on, and a good lathering of T-Gel. Not rolled since. ;D Hx

I try not to bath them if I can help it but because I show my whippets and some of them have a lot of white they do have to have a bath occasionally. I usually use baby shampoo and special shampoo for white dogs on their white bits.

I wash ours as and when in the winter. When Flynn gets muddy or smelly as soon as Tia rolls in fox poo. ;D It is done outside so is very quick and often a part bath followed by warm towels and warm radiators to lie under. In the summer I bath them when their coats look a bit dull.I use baby shampoo and not too much of it.

Thank you for al your advice, sounds like I don't really need to worry about bathing him. He doesn't smell anymore (washing his bedding seems to have sorted that one out!)

We washed Polly for the first time last night - she was so good! The stuff that came out of her coat was just scary lol We used Pet Head for itchy flakey skin, and she now smells great!
