Hi all. Would really appreciate all thoughts/advice.
My greyhound bell has been with us about 4 months now. I love her to pieces. We have had the usual teething problems with her settling, separation anxiety etc etc but now she is really settled and just a wonderful dog.
Problem is she is rapidly loosing all her hair. It started on her thighs as seems to be common with greyhounds, then spread to her belly. The kennels i took her from assure me this is normal molting so i didnt worry too much, now she has virtually no hair at all on her belly, chest and a large bald spot on her throat. I brush her 3 or 4 times a day and the amount of dead dry hair coming off is unbelievable. Her skin isnt red, itchy or sore, she doesnt scratch, in fact it doesnt seem to bother her at all. He has flea treatment, has cod liver oil in her food, i tried coal tar shampoo, im rubbing Dermacton on her bald spots but still it is just getting thinner and thinner. I thought it might be an allergy so have stopped all her treats that im not sure about. im running out of ideas!
Would love to hear your thoughts!
thanks!

If the balding isnt starting on her back dont worry about it its normal. Cut down on the number of times a day that you brush her though you are over brushing. Once or twice a week is plenty or just a quick swoop over once a day with a rubber glove or mitten. She is due her big moult now so you should start to see the fur coming back shortly

thanks guys it is a big reassurance to hear that. Thank goodness for this forum! I will certainly cut down on the brushing, she normally has a load of fluff on her so il just use the rubber glove as you say. So it does sound like a big molt as you are suggesting, but the bald spot on her throat seems odd? ive stopped her wearing her collar for now, but it appears as though its rubbed all the hair away!

Is she wearing a leather collar? I stopped using leather collars on mine because they were constantly bald under the neck. We use the material martingales now instead.

Our greyhound Jasmin started getting the baldy bum/thighs, a lot of them do seem to get this & there have been many threads on all the forums, I have been giving her a couple of wilkinsons condition tablets a day & they seem to be helping, I dont think its some thing to worry about too much.

I was going to post about balding thighs soon so this has been a really interesting - and comforting - thread. I didn't know about moult time at all The links to other threads were really useful as well - thanks Vickyanne - and I will be trying Misty on fish and fish oils etc next week. And in the meantime, hoovering a lot

Teasel has baldy buttocks and tum syndrome. I've been giving her Vetzyme conditioning tablets and now she has hairy arm pits again and a fluffy rear end. ;D
I also did away with a leather collar and now only use a soft martingale. The other place Teasel goes baldy is her ears, but that may be cos they are gorgously soft and I keep stroking them! ;D

she is using a leather collar yes. For the time being she isnt wearing any collar until the hair starts to regrow but il definitely be using a martingale from now on. Have also ordered a zoom groom after all the rave reviews on the other threads, cant believe they could be so effective! Thanks again to everyone who has chipped in with advice, it really is appreciated. I think im going to start a simple website today just documenting my experiences with owning Belle , the more info out there the better i guess!

Barney was fully-furred when he came here, but after his first moult his tummy and chest went totally bald . To this day, when he's upside down he still looks like the last chicken in Sainsbury's! We take the positive view - less hoovering! Jo x

Hi all,
My Boris who I adopted about 2 1/2months ago is going quite bald on his neck. My partner reckons I'm overreacting but when I got him he had a long white flash on his neck where he now resembles a dalmation as the skin underneath has lots of little black spots. I have started taking his green collar off when he's not out on walks and his house one sits higher than the affected area and doesn't move so shouldn't be rubbing his neck. I'm just wondering whether the green collar has been the cause or its the molt (although his coats in pretty good condition otherwise) or just one of those things he might just have a balding neck now :S

I'm taking him to the vet tomorrow but I want to know noww
