Hi
I’m new to the forum but wanted to ask some advice. We have recently adopted a rescue Lurcher having lost our last one a few months ago.
He is approx 3 years old and is displaying quite extreme S/A. Long story short, the rescue said he was fine with being left, however we have since been told this was with other dogs and obviously we don’t have any other dogs.
Basically he has chewed through door posts and doors for the last week. I know it’s early days but I thought I would ask for any advice.
We have booked a trainer for basic training anyway.
He seems to have forged a strong attachment to me which is getting worse. I can’t leave a room without him trying to barge through the door with me and then starting to scratch as soon as I am on the other side of it. We have had to take him into our bedroom as the first couple of nights he got himself into an awful state as soon as we went to bed.
He doesn’t display quite the same anxiety if I remove myself from the equation and he’s with my husband in the room. We have been told for me to back off a bit which is quite hard as I’m the one at home with him the majority of the time.
We have borrowed a crate, and he has been in and out of it for a few minutes and we’ve only had it 24 hours. Should I persevere with this? I have read the guides to helping with S/A and I think we’re doing all the right things. It’s very early days but one of the questions is if I can manage to get out of the room and he starts scratching straight away do I go straight back in or wait? I’ve seen you should try and wait 5 mins even if they start scratching but he gets so distressed it takes an age to calm him down. Also need to add, we have a 12 year old and she is getting quite distressed at seeing him like this.
Any advice gratefully received. I’m not expecting miracles any time soon but just reassurance we’re on the right track.
Many thanks
