Hi,
looking for some advice please! We have had Max (our third rescue) for about 3 weeks he's a very polite, slightly shy boy who has settled well in the house although still a bit nervous (but improving!) out on walks. He sleeps upstairs in our room on his own bed. He's got a bed downstairs too which he'll occasionally use. Has been left for 4h no issue.
However in the last week/10 days he has started waking at various times in the night. His ears are up and he lets of a really loud bark or three (loud enough to wake us and occasionally our 7 year old sleeping a few rooms away up). A few times we've worked out it's been a noise that sets him off (milkman, radiators coming on etc...) but other times we are stumped. Some nights he doesn't do it at all and others several times. Sometimes it's around 1am and others times 4-5am (so no discernible pattern). He looks like he's woken up with a shock, but isn't aggressive towards us (so not sleep startle we don't think) it's more like a guard dog type reaction. He will settle back down, sometimes with just a firm "bed" and other times he requires us to stroke him and reassure him (so no big deal- except for the broken sleep!). On occasion he's gone down stairs wandered round, eaten or drunk and then come back to bed. We tried to let him out to see if that's it but he's not gone so pretty sure it isn't.
We've put pj's on him, given him a snack before bed tried a quick walk up the street, turned up the heating. Sometimes that's worked but as I said it's very random. He's really settled in our room but if it doesn't stop he might have to be downstairs (although I do worry that he'll just come up or if we stop him will bark loudly and wake up the entire house every time as we can't quickly reassure him). Any advice would be much appreciated as he's done so well elsewhere that we want to get this right (and we are all tired and grumpy 😂)
Thanks in advance!
