Hello all,
I'm hoping to get some advise.
I have just adopted a retired racer (day 3 ) He is 4, has been in foster care for a few weeks with the adoption people so has been inside a little.
The problem is when I have to bring him to the toilet I have to use the elevator to bringing him outside. I live in a large apartment in a city so outside has lots of new distractions and must be a lot for him to process.
He will not walk down the hallway to the elevator or get in by himself. I have to carry him. He shakes while the lift is moving and even more when it comes to a halt.
Afterwards he is quite happy to get outside but it is a city street....Lots of distractions!
I Have limited his trip to the toilet to a one block loop. I revisit the same places that he likes to go toilet. Keeping it all very close to home. But he freezes when it is time to get back into the building. He knows he is going back in the elevator.
I use treats to entice him and he goes a little further every time but backs off when he knows he is getting close to the door. But he hates it and needs to be picked up. I have also tried the stairs, thats a no go also.
I got him outside the building for a bathroom break this afternoon. But he got over excited at a small dog and I brought him back inside.
What is the min amount of times he should be brought out? What advise would you give to help ease the stress of going out to toilet? Would a harness help?
Right now he is limited to the crate in our living room most of the time. Short sniffs around 1 room after toilet breaks as advised for now.
He will take treats out of my hand when he is calm but wont take any when stressed.
Open to any suggestions. Thanks!
