Hi all, I have recently adopted a 5 year old male ex racer. Does anyone know why when seeing other dogs he licks his lips?? He has been with Us a month now he is fantastic in the house and with my 4 year old but when my wife walks him she is very nervous of his behaviour, any advice appreciated

He's probably nervous/anxious.Ex-racers usually are only used to their own kind,so other breeds are one of the strange things they have to become accustomed to in a whole new world. They are however very good at recognizing other sight hounds. And small, fast moving dogs can trigger their prey drive- it's what he was trained for.I can remember our girl being being rooted to the spot when she saw her 1st pug - she just did not realise it was a dog sat on the path, took a while to get her to walk past it.Cath

Congratulations on your new hound! Lip licking is usually a sign of stress or nerves. He has never seen much of anything other than other greyhounds, his kennel and the race track so everything else is mind blowing. Your home is now his safe space and you will see more of his personality emerge as he becomes more comfortable and relaxed. Outside is still probably more of a challenge for him. Try and walk the same route for a while, talk to him but allow him to stop and sniff and look at things. Please keep him muzzled too, just in case a cat or or something else sets off his prey drive!
