Our 12 year old boy is very poorly.
He's slowed down significantly over the past few months and has also lost a fair bit of weight despite still eating normally.
He's got some muscle wastage in his back legs and had a bout of colitis approximately 3 months ago. He's become reluctant to go on a walk and no longer gets up to greet us, though had been happy to see us and trot up and down the garden.
On Christmas Eve he had a fall in the garden and had to be carried back in to the house. He refused his dinner and was obviously feeling sore after his fall. He went downhill on Christmas day and wouldn't leave his bed for breakfast or dinner. We hand fed him some chicken though he didn't eat a lot. He would get up to drink and wee, but it's very hard work for him and he's incredibly slow and wobbly.
The situation was the same on Boxing Day and yesterday. He's very listless and today has eaten nothing. He's still drinking. He's had a bout of uncontrollable diarrhea and is making groaning noises and pulling his tummy in.
The vet has given him a painkiller injection and as his temperature is raised, an antibiotic. He's back there in the morning. He's treating him for colitis again but suspects due to the weight loss it could be 'something more'.
I'm concerned about what to do if there's no improvement by tomorrow. And, of course, him not eating. We realise he's an old boy now, but am worried that we won't know the right thing to do. What if it's 'just colitis' and we don't realise...What if it's something more sinister and we don't make the right decision to help him.
Any advice re colitis would be much appreciated. I've never seen him this poorly though he was pretty bad with colitis last time...this just seems different somehow.
Thank you in advance.
Ps Forgot to mention he's also on metacam for his joints
