My 10 year old dog has just been diagnosed with chronic renal failure. I have been given cans of renal food which she won't even look at. She is losing weight at a rate of knots. She will no longer eat dry food. I am looking for what I can feed her that won't irritate the problem. Thanks.

Hi. Sue no advice/ suggestions really as our 13 yr old girl was diagnosed with this earlier this year at first she loved the renal tinned food but we are in the same boat as you she's stopped the tins she is eating the dried version but again it's hit and miss. Hope you find a solution and will watch this thread to see if someone comes up with any suggestions, as I've googled just about everything but haven't come up with anything helpful.

Its a rotten diagnosis, you sound like you are going through the mill. My sister's grey had similar problems and her vet agreed that her lad could have a "light" food ( she used burns chicken light I think) or an older dog food with lower protein to atleast get him eating. Her lad was the same ,he would eat the wet food but wasn't fussed at all with the dry food. She also made him warm mash potatoes which seems to sooth him. The only word of warning from the vet was it could accelerate his condition, so it was making a decision relating to that versus him not eating and it also depended where on the scale of the renal issues that he was. Best of luck.

I am pleased to say she is now eating Royal Canin renal wet food with a little bit of renal dry food mixed in. I warm it up a bit in the microwave and she eats it!! She has had a couple of little blips and a big one at Christmas, but seems to have settled down now. Her energy levels are up and she now joins in play with the 2 younger whippets.
