hi,
Recently our hound has had a lot more energy than usual. We've had him almost a year. Until now he has been quite content with three or four walks a day, but recently he has been needing a lot more exercise. The last few nights we've also struggled to get him to sleep through the night. He has just been out a 2.30am walk as he was chewing furniture and ripping up books - pretty out of character for him. He didn't need the toilet, but I made him stay out until he went. When we got back he spent about 5 minutes doing zoomies around the flat and running in circles on the bed. He is now finally lying down (3.20am). We've been trying to make sure he has plenty mental as well as physical exercise, and I'm a bit confused as to this change in behaviour.
Is this usual Spring behaviour?? He has been doing zoomies more and more in the flat recently. We don't have an enclosed park nearby but he gets to run around on a harness and long line outside. We do take him to an enclosed park sometimes but as he has to walk a bit to get there he can never be bothered to run! Any suggestions to help him sleep through the night again? He is quite young, only 3.
I wondered if we were maybe giving him his dinner a bit late and he was getting a boost of energy at the wrong time? He is on 3 meals a day, with dinner at 7.30pm/8 ish. When do other people feed their hounds?
It seems a major behavioural change but I wasn't sure if a vet trip was necessary - he seems more happy and bouncy than usual so feel it would be a bit odd to take him and say there's something wrong with him! Any suggestions for tiring him out and keeping him happy? The zoomies in the flat are a bit scary as I'm worried he's going to run into a door or wall! He's going 5 or 6 walks a day at the moment, all 20 minutes or more.
Thanks
K
