Hi Wondering if anybody has any experience of post operative bleeding (excessive) in their hounds? Holly is in need of a dental (I have tried so hard to keep her teeth in good condition but nothing works) She doesn't chew anything everything is swallowed whole, big or small! It's worrying enough at her age , she'll be 13 in April, but she is what is known s a "greyhound bleeder". After her previous dentals she bled excessively but on the last occasion it was so bad our vet thought we would lose her. I have been in touch with Dr Couto for anybody that doesn't know he specialises in Sighthounds and greyhound bleeding. He has recommended Tranexamic Acid tablets before and after the procedure. This will be the first time I have used this on Holly. Has anybody used Tranexamic acid tabs for their greyhounds? If so how effective was it? Any thoughts/advice would be very welcome Thank you and sorry for the long post Jill & Holly

Jo will be more than happy to speak to you on messenger if you have any queries, she is so helpful.
I don't know if you remember Lorraine Edwards who had Herbie, Milo and Skye? Amicar (aminocaproic acid) which is similar to tranexamic acid saved Herbie's life when he had his leg amputated as he had the post op bleeding/clotting problem. She's on fb and posted on gaps fb page too. She won't have her dogs operated on without it, including dentals. She had her new dog Flynn tested for something when he was young before he was neutered, I think it was part of some research as there is a genetic link either to it or something very similar. Amicar isn't widely available in the UK, it has to be ordered from the US so is expensive. I believe Liverpool vet school keep it in stock but tranexamic acid is just as good I believe.

Hi Jill, as said above Herbie my grey also suffered from greyhound bleeding disorder. He was given amicar or aminocarproic acid which helped saved his life. The vets at Leahurst Liverpool vet school will not operate on greyhounds now for any proceedure unless they are given this drug before hand as a preventative measure as greyhound bleeding disorder is becomming more prevalent due to close inbreeding of greys.
Amicar is an expensive drug and not always easily available but now tranexamic acid is another alternative. It was orginally prescribed to women with troublesome menstral bleeding but is found to be effective for greys with bleeding disorder.
Like amicar , tranexamic acid should be given before surgery and after to prevent the condition occuring usually 24 hrs after a proceedure.
I am glad your vet is aware of this condition as not all vets in this country are.
If you were really worried about Holly you could ask for her to be referred to Liverpool vet school or at least get your vet to ask their advice etc They were wonderful with Herbie and saved his life as my own vet knew nothing of this disorder and when it ocurred failed to recognise what was happening. It was only our insistence that Herbie was sent to Leahurst that saved him as he was near death when he got there. Thank God they knew all about it and got the drugs into him in time.
I hope all goes well with Holly and if you want to chat or ask any more questions please do.
Lorraine xxxx

Thank you again Vickyb I'm not on Facebook but will join now. Dr Couto did advise that amicar was hard to come by and Tranexamic acid is an alternative that is readily available over here. Thanks again Jill Lorraine thank you for your reply. I've not been on this forum for such a long while and have missed so much, good and bad. I've just read a post that you wrote about your gorgeous boy Herbie. Such a brave boy, so heart breaking when they leave us, cancer is so cruel. They really do take a piece of our heart with them. I was so happy to read that you were able to give him that extra time . Thank you for the info on Liverpool vet school. I will ask my vet to get in touch as she is still very reluctant to do the dental, purely because of the bleeding holly had previously. This disorder is not known by regular vets and really should be. I had to do my own research and take it back to my vet. They will not hold the T A tablets so I keep a stock of it at home! Best wishes to you and your hounds Jill & Holly
