We got a 2.5year old retired greyhound yesterday and he has so much energy I was not expecting this from a greyhound! We have a large backyard and I think he has become too over excited at this prospect and has been running and playing so much (yesterday was 4hours!) and then he will constantly bark at me to play with him..he is very loud!
We are trying the ignore approach to teach him that barking won't get him what he wants but he also seems to whimper and whinge sometimes when trying to settle and won't stop until someone is touching or patting him.
How do we get him to calm down a little? I understand this is a new place and the excitement may be getting to him.
We took for a 45minute walk this morning and he was so good and quiet and polite on the leash but as soon as we got home the barking started again.

Sounds like he wants another Hound as a playmate. At his age he is the equivalent of a teenager. Perhaps he might like Fly Ball etc At his age he is very young to have been retired from racing, sounds like he needs something to occupy his mind.
Jagger my first Greyhound who I rehomed at 7 & 1/2 use to have me walking for nearly 4 hours in the morning including 2 hours of that with him racing around the park off the lead, he also liked another hours walk late afternoon. When we got back home he liked cuddles on the sofa, then would stretch out fully with one of our moggies cuddled up with him.

Hi congratulations on your new addition! Your new hound is like a puppy and everything you present him with is a new experience. As an ex-racer (do you know when he finished racing?) he will have spent all his time in kennels and likely only met other greyhounds. He will need time to adjust to his new surroundings and what is expected of him, just as much as you will towards him. His barking may well just be over-excitement, but he will need to learn when it's appropriate. First of all I would definitely recommend you read Lisa's post: greyhoundgap.proboards.com/thread/29756/new-hound-homeand the other pinned posts on the advice board. They are invaluable!

Vanessa beat me to it! Follow Lisa's advice to the letter-it really does work. Give yourself and your hound time and let us know how you get on
