Hi. Help please! I've just been to the vets with Daisy. It looks like she could have a grass seed in her back paw. The vet seemed a bit too eager to knock her out and start slicing for my liking so I asked if there was anything else we could try first. I know in extreme cases grass seeds can move up the body and cause bigger problems but I also know someone who's dog was operated on for 2 hours and the grass seed still wasn't found. So, I stood my ground and we came away with antibiotics and Metacam. I am also bathing it in salt water. Anyway, my question is, has anyone ever used silica in a case like this. Apparently it's good for helping to expel foreign bodies from the system and I wondered if anyone had good results from using it. Thanks. Janine x

Sorry, no help with the silica, but Bella our Pointer had a grass seed migrate from her pad & it ended up causing a huge lump in her abdomen. It came up really quickly, & we had to have it removed surgically. She ended up with a massive wound which we had issues with until it was fully healed. Just be aware they can turn nasty if they stat in for a while. I'd be interested to know if silica does work, and helps with expelling foreign bodies though, in case it ever happens again.
Hope Daisy is OK & you get it sorted. Xxx

Haven't used it in dogs but used in on my donkey when she had a foot abscess - I think it made it come to head quicker than if I hadn't used it.

Magnesium Sulphate Paste? Old fashioned but still available - seems promoted initially as boil/carbuncle treatment, but main thing is it's "drawing" properties.Chris and I are familiar with it from nursing past and at home have used it for imbedded splinters/thorns as well.Brief Google says other dog owners have used it for grass seeds etc - check it out. From our experience(human) dosn't take long to work - Cath.

Hi. Thanks for the replies and advice. Well so far so good. Her foot does seem to look a bit better today. The swelling has gone down a bit and it doesn't seem to be as red and sore. I'm not sure whether it's the medication, the bathing or the silica or a combination that's helped but I am continuing with all three for now. I haven't seen any sign of the seed though so will be keeping a close eye out for any signs of it or any problems in general. Thanks again. Janine x
