A friend of mine has a rescue pointer who the vet thinks may have pancreas problems (tests due back next week) he has said the dog may have to go on a prescription diet, so I wondered if anyone here had any suggestions for food if the tests come back positive. Also she was thinking of putting her on a raw diet - so any advice on that would be helpful too.

Wendy - the low fat prescription diet costs an arm and leg.It was £70+ plus a week for little Jem (who hovers round the 20kg mark, despite eating like a horse!).She couldn't stand the stuff, and I think the only prescription diet covered by insurance is for renal stones.Something for your friend to bear in mind.
Jem has a home cooked diet - really sensible eating;chicken, fish, plenty of veg etc.All the stuff we told patients when the NHS stopped providing special low fat diets.Jem loves it(and so does Perry) and the vet is happy with her.AndyWillow has switched to raw - and I think that includes Delta, who has pancreatic problems.
Hope this is some help - Cath.

I guess every dog is different. My Whip Baxter had pancreatitis and had Royal canin gastro intestinal low fat kibble. Very expensive but it worked for him and he enjoyed it xxx

Thanks for the reply - will pass it on. I suppose until she gets the results next week she doesn't know exactly what she is dealing with but it trying to do her research beforehand.
