I suspect we have a rat's nest under our garden shed. I will contact a pest control firm tomorrow. My main concern of course is for our two beloved greyhounds - if poisoned bait needs to be used, how do we ensure their safety? Would we need to keep them out of the back garden until the problem is resolved? What experience do others have of this problem? I would really value your insights.

Please don't mention rats - I'm sick off them!Neighbour still insists on feeding the birds and then complains about rats on the bird table. We did ask a pest controller about it(when they came for a wasps nest) but it sounded dodgy, mainly cos the poison seemed to take several days to work and the rats could have been anywhere in the garden when they died.Jem is an ace scavenger so that seemed a no go.We did have some success with rat traps till Madame found 1 with a freshly killed rat - nearly cost Chris his fingers and her her teeth cos she wasn't letting go!Not much heip I know - but the houndies still live in hope that they catch the blasted things.I know we all live close to them but over the past 2 years just can't work out where they're coming from -Cath.

We live near a field so do get rats but my cat is an excellent hunter, I would be really worried about poison and to be honest I put up with the odd rat.

Yes, if it's only the odd rat....I'm just worried that there may be a family of them. If traps are used, what does one actually do with the live rats? I gather it's illegal to release them elsewhere....

We've got rats in the garden - I stopped feeding the birds but they haven't yet moved on. In the past the council have put traps down and got rid. Now we've got greyhounds I'm hoping they'll keep them in check as they like small furry objects. They haven't caught one yet, but have been sniffing around where we have seen them.
So - I would have thought greyhounds and lurchers ought to make sure you don't get overrun. I'm not bothering with the council again as they just come back, and we live near a couple of schools and the kids are always throwing food down to keep them well fed. So just hope the hounds will eventually scare them away.
