We've recently found out that our 9yr old grey has both liver & kidney failure. Does anyone on gap have a dog with these conditions, would appreciate any advise on diet please

I have been told that Australian Organic Tumeric can help in these cases. But ensure you get it from Australia and is the Organic type. You can get it in powder or capsules direct from Australia. Three boxes of 120 capsules each costs $95 Australian i.e. around £48 via PayPal includes p&p. The capsules contain ginger and black pepper. Other than that your vet will advice you of a food for your dog. Sorry to hear of its problems/illnesses.

So sorry to read this Has the vet suggested Denamarin for the liver? its very good stuff but expensive if you buy it from the vet. You can buy it cheaper online without a prescription much cheaper if the insurance aren't paying, pet plan cover it for Bod no problem. Our vet suggested a home cooked diet as he knows what I think of prescription diets and gave me a diet sheet to follow for Kidney disease. Bods bloods improved for a while but then he stopped eating it and got regular diarrhoea so I gave up. He's now on good quality wet food in the morning and a small amount of fishmongers dry with a lot of wet for his tea, more wet and biscuits for supper but he's still quite picky esp in the morning which apparently they can be with kidney disease so I add pretty much anything in small amounts that I can get him to eat. Chris told me that the old idea of a very low protein diet has been found to be not necessary in most cases and what's more important is the quality of it so things like chicken and white fish are idea. Bod was having chicken thighs and turkey mince which are cheaper than chicken breast when I was cooking for him. If you google kidney diets for dogs there is masses of info.

Thank you very much for your kind thoughts, yes Spice is on denamarin for his liver, the vet told me low protein & salt in his diet and recommended the dry renal diet which we are now trying but he seems hungry they just suggest to add pasta to bulk it up. He's having more blood tests in 2 weeks so will see if he's improved any.

Sandra - I can agree with what Vicky said about low protein diet.I know dogs can be different from people.but when we 1st started doing major liver resections it was all low protein - and they were all starving, plenty of carbs but it never filled them up!Then further research showed that protein wasn't harmful. But from what I can remember(cos we didn't have many renal patients) low salt and less fluids makes sense - probably no help, but hope you can find the right balance with Spice.Perhaps when he goes back for his blood tests you could query the low protein?Cath

I find that by having mainly wet food Bod doesn't drinks as much as he gets liquid from the food and so he wees a lot less which is good as his first symptoms were drinking and weeing lots. He was leaky at night but now he's on incurin and with the change in diet he's dry overnight again.
