I received a call from the Cinnamon Trust this afternoon to ask if I would take an emergency temporary foster because the owner had collapsed and been taken to hospital. He is a Bassett hound called Bruno and is four years old. I would not normally accept a dog without introductions but time was of the essence and they assured me he would be fine with four greyhounds.....and he is . I collected him from a neighbour who could give me no information other than "he is a lovely dog" - which he is. After taking all the dogs out for a walk we got home and I had no idea what he eats. I got Jeremy to weigh him and he is a whopping 35kgs. He is a third of the height of Oafy but weighs the same although I've got to say he is in great shape and looks a perfectly healthy weight. In the absence of knowing what or how much he should eat I gave him our own dog food in the same quantities as Oafy. He gobbled it down. My question is - Is this ok? Any advice would be gratefully appreciated. Maryx UPDATE.......Bruno's owner had a stroke and although doing well he will not be able have Bruno back permanently. We do however have a happy ending. The man's daughter came to collect him today, and he was overjoyed to see her. She advised that for some time they have been trying to persuade him they should have Bruno but he was very resistant. Her Dad will make a recovery but he has agreed the best place for Bruno is with her. A lovely outcome as Bruno has a loving home and as she said her Dad will continue to see him regularly I really enjoyed having him he was a super boy.

That's fine Mary. We have a few Bassetts in at work and they all eat roughly the same as my two, though they are prone to weight gain so watch him for that if you have him for a while. I love Bassett Hounds Also, keep an eye on his ears and any skin folds in his arm pits etc. They are very prone to ear and skin problems. Good luck

Well done on taking Bruno at such short notice. I must admit to having a bit of a soft spot for Bassets.
If you are feeding dried food then usually the amount to feed is given in relation to the dog's weight regardless of breed, so I would have thought that feeding him the same as Oafy should be ok. It won't so him any harm unless he's on a special diet for any reason. Hopefully you'll be able to get an update from his owner about what he normally eats etc.
