Hello, just joined today as I have a couple of issues i need some help with! I adopted my 6yr old retired retired greyhound Scout just over a month ago. We got on grand from the start, literally no issues at all. She wasn't toilet/house trained, no problem, got it straight away. Hoovers?! Not an issue! So all in all, easy! However, that was because my hound was a little shell shocked, and wasn't reacting normally.
I bought a crate for her, but ended up just leaving it open for her to go in when she wanted, and just let her sleep in the livingroom, either on her bed or the sofa (no issues with that at all). That was working out fine, however, I made a massive mistake and let her sleep on my bed a few times. There wasn't an issue until this weekend. I let her sleep upstairs one night, and when i went to leave her downstairs the next night she cried for ages then started chewing the door.
I had to leave her for about 4 hours on two separate occasions, without really building up to being left (i know, my fautl!) and she chewed the door a little and ate half her collar. So I know she chews when she is anxious.
I can't take the risk of any more chewing (rented house) so I decided I need to put her in her crate at night, maybe just until she is better at being left, and forgets about wanting upstairs? Im hoping that we can get back to sleeping in the living room again!
I put her in the crate last night, and she cried all night, her bed was wet with drool this morning and she had chewed the throw i put over the crate to make her feel more snug.
So basically I would like some advice about whats the best way to nip this in the bud right now before it escalates. Is the best thing to do just persevere with putting her in the crate at night, and build up to being left in the crate when i go out? it would make me feel better not worrying about the house getting chewed, but I want her to be comfy! Will her anxiety about being in the crate at night get better the more I do it, or am i just causing her more stress?
I feel like such a bad dog mum right now!! :-(
