Hi all. We are considering that at some point in the future we may have to change Ben's arthritis supplement as he is having a 'sticky' couple of days at the moment. It does happen from time to time, then he's fine again for ages, and to be fair, we think getting in and out of the new car may have a little to do with it as it's possibly slightly higher than the previous one was. Ben's a greyhound and will be 9 in October and has been diagnosed since he was 4. We'll see how he goes for the next few days as he's been chasing Lucy round tonight but we are looking at options to keep him away from having to go onto Metacam for as long as is possible. Andy has found something called Riaflex. Has anyone had any experiences of these products for arthritic greyhounds - good or bad??? Thanks very much J

I've used It for the last 4 years for my late whippet Baxter and now my 9yo lurcher Ceecee. So after using it for 4 years I think it's fair to say I think it's good xxx

Hi alexandsteve - thanks for the quick response. I love your photos of Ceecee so it certainly doesn't seem to be doing any harm. Ben does occasionally have a wobble for a few days and often in Spring/Autumn when our crazy weather is a bit more crazy than usual so we're going to see if he gets over it in the next few days before deciding whether to switch to something else and are just looking at other options. We really don't want Ben on Metacam any sooner than he needs to be since weaning him off it just over 2 and a half years ago but we accept that as he gets older, he may need something stronger than he's on now. That's one good endorsement anyway so thank you - and I hope Ceecee continues to flourish on it too xx

I use Flexijoints from vetvits and find them very good indeed. All my dogs have them and all are getting on a bit! So far, any problems have been averted, so am a firm believer in them www.vetvits.co.uk/dog-supplements/

I use Synoquin for Mickey who was diagnosed as having very loose hips and arthritis in his right legs from being over-raced on tracks too tight for his size. I keep him off Metacam as much as possible as it makes him have very loose stools, which I am now fighting again as he had to have the equivalent of Metacam and anti-biotics some time ago after being attacked by another dog whilst he was being walked by a different dog walker to normal.

I sell the Riaflex products. The devil's claw one is called devil's alternative - it is quite strong so needs to be given with food and if there appears to be any problems with digestion must be stopped straight away. Both products have good results.
They sell direct from their website.

Thanks to lurcherlot, Ted and muttlies6 for your suggestions and advice. (Ted - I hope Mickey is recovering after his attack). All suggestions for us to think about and I'll check Flexijoints from vetvits too. Happily, Ben has been a lot better today. Possibly the sunny and warm weather has helped but he's been a lot more himself today. He went out limping on his walk yesterday and gradually loosened up a bit and ended up limping again by the end but today was pretty much normal until the very end of the walk and hasn't been particularly peg-legging round the house today either. Hopefully, it's just one of his sticky phases and he'll settle down over the next couple of days and be fine again. Ben can leap around with the best of them when he wants, but just can't reach with his back legs to scratch his ears when standing. Thanks for the help all of you J

We decided it was time to try Ben on something else in the end. We have started Ben on Riaflex products today. A small tub of the Joint Plus was ordered on Monday and it was with us the next day (free postage too I believe!). Certainly great service! We had a little trial trying to extract the scoop from the powder as we couldn't find it, but with the help of a plastic spoon, I found it in the end. Andy gave Ben the supplement today and apart from a slight acknowledgement that something different was on his food, he took it with no problem. To be fair, this was expected as Ben is very belly-driven and would probably eat chopped up shoes if you offered them - as long as he's given a meal, he doesn't care. He does seem better today actually. Most likely the warmer weather has helped but we shall see how we go over the next few weeks. Thanks to all for your help J
