Some advice, please, for my sister!
For the next two weeks, she is dogsitting Harry, a whippet who belongs to friends of ours. He will go to his dog walker's during the day, and my sister is staying at our friends' flat with him at night.
Last night (the first night), she put him in his crate at bedtime as instructed, but very soon he started to create - whining and crying. She left him around 10-15 minutes, but he didn't settle. Concerned that he might be unwell (he had a dicky tummy for a couple of days in the week), she let him out, but he just came bounding out, wagging his tail, leaped on the sofa bed and started playing with his toys. After a while, she put him back in his crate, but he then started whining again. In the end, she let him out again, and he slept with her on the sofa bed without a peep.
Trouble is, she's been told that under no circumstances is he allowed to sleep on the bed!
So, of course, she's concerned about how to tackle the next two weeks. My feeling is that she needs to persevere with the crate, and that Harry is simply upset that his owners aren't there, and she agrees, but she's also worried about how to deal with him if he starts crying again.
What advice would you offer under the circumstances?

Well I'd do anything for quiet nights of peaceful sleep so I'm afraid the dog would sleep where he felt settled and happy....but then mine have always slept in their own beds beside mine so I have no experience of crating at all. Sorry, that's probably not much help to you.

I'm afraid I think that if you are helping someone out then it's tough if you break routine for a good reason.

None of my Hounds have ever had a crate, Mickey has his own bed next to mine, Kelly sleeps on a dog bed on the floor in my bedroom, Merlin sleeps on his own bed in the small back room, Menta sleeps on a mat in the front room. This makes them all extremely quiet at night and during the day time. In the morning after I have fed them at 7am I go back to bed and Mickey goes to his bed, Kelly to her's, Menta curls up on the mat in the front room, and Merlin joins me on my bed for a cuddle. Until I get up at 9am to take them for their walk at the Riverside Park.

Only dogs need to know where their humans are at all times. I could not bear to hear one of my own dogs crying at night, least of all anybody else's.

I'd let him out and let him sleep where he is happy. Jake foster dog obviously hasn't been crated before but he has coped well and slept in his crate soundly the 2nd and 3rd night here (I didn't want to stress him first night). I don't like taking foster dogs to bed incase their new owners don't want them upstairs but Jake barks loudly at so he is sleeping upstairs with us now and sleeps through happily. He is however crated during the day if I pop out but I would rather him be happy, also he has lost his mum so don't want to upset him anymore. He has also found our bed!

Thanks everyone. She's more than happy for him to join her on the bed, and I'm sure our friends will understand - after all, they want him to be happy and relaxed, too.

Ours have always slept in our room in their beds , when we got Dulcie I knew Sue had crated her at night so I did the same , she started to grizzle and I went down and got her and she has been in my room ever since she must have thought I was a soft touch
