Boris is back in the vets.Thought at first it was pancreatitis back but its looking more like a back problem now. He is having neurological tests & may need referral to a specialist. Do vets only use one specialist ? can I ask for a particular one ? Anyone have any knowledge of good specialist for this type of problem ? We are near to Banbury Oxon. He was doing so well & now this. so upset for him poor little chap . Update. Boris is home now & much better. It seems to have probably been a soft tissue injury. He is on anti inflammatories & being kept quiet. This dog is determined to break my heart & purse !!

Oh no I was offered the choice of two specialists by our vet Bart, he recommended a particular one so we went with his advice. I have everything crossed your boy will be well again soon and that they can get to the bottom of the back problem. Xxx

Poor Boris I do hope the vets get his problem sorted out quickly. In as far as asking for a specific specialist is concerned, you are quite entitled to do so - I would however be guided by my vet.

So sorry Boris is poorly again. I think most vets have a preference for particular specialists but if I wanted my dog to go to a particular one I would ask them to refer me there or give me a good reason why not. After all I pay the bill but if they said they felt somewhere else was better then I would follow their advice if possible.

Totally agree.....when one of ours needed a specialist referral we said we didn't want to go back to the one we were originally referred to, our vet was very eager to know our views and discussed other options and openly discussed feedback on specialists from other clients. Of course, sometimes it depends on the type of specialist required, some will stand out on merit, or there may be very limited options in some cases I would imagine.

Thank you for the advice. The specialist that my vet uses is Willow vets which Lisa has a problem with. The neuro tests my vet did were ok so he is going to x ray now & we will wait for that. Boris is in less pain now which is good. Just hoping we can get a clear diagnoses for him. Sadly he is not insured so its bread & water for us humans for a while !!!

If you want to see a certain specialist you can do this and he/she will then contact your vet for the referral. I had to do this when Jagger back in 2004 had two spinal operations to remove a calcified neck spinal disc and he needed Hydrotherapy, Physiotherapy etc, my vets in Bracknell had decided I should take him across the road to what turned out to be unqualified person using their swimming pool, no safety equipment etc. I looked on the internet found out about Greyfriars Hydrotherapy Centre who were highly trained fully qualified in the USA and they then asked my vets to send them a referral letter. My vets were not happy about this and decided to charge me £40 referral fee which PetPlan paid anyway after playing hell with our then vets. You are allowed to go to the qualified person of your own choice which is stated by DEFRA and the Veterinary profession body. Some vets believe they can lay down the law to you but remember you are the owner/carer of that animal and you are the one that have to cover any costs arising.
