As we are going to Scotland this year the vet recommended Advantix instead of Frontline for the duration as it repels ticks. I know some repellants aren't safe for greyhounds. Do any hound owners use this? I'm always nervous about stronger preparations as some hounds are quite sensitive to strong preparations.
So do I Advantix - or stick with Frontline and a tick remover?

I've used it and it was fine. Not sure how effective it was but no one got ticks! Frontline should kill ticks too but I think it takes up to 48 hrs.

The vet said Advantix repels ticks so they don't attach - however my online research showed a couple of rehoming places in the USA saying it isn't safe - and then others saying it is. Left me confused.

I haven't used it but its always a worry when you read something negative about any chemical treatments Out of interest was there any information on what the concern was about Advantix? I was going to suggest Scalibor as although I've not used it I'm sure others here have recommended it (maybe Nettie when travelling to France?) www.mypet.com/scalibor/what-is-scalibor.aspxScalibor contains deltamethrin, Advantix contains permethrin and imidacloprid.... its sometimes helpful to know what the active substances are.

Apparently permethrin is considered unsafe for greys. I don't exactly know why. Pyrethrin is OK - permethrin isn't. There is stuff online about it, but my little brain can only take in the dos and don'ts, not the whys and wherefores! I'll see what I can find out about Scalibor and deltamethrin. Thanks.

Bertie had a reaction to Scalibor collars after a couple of years causing him jaw pain however the other two were fine, it is also dangerous to cats. The most recent collar to come out is the Seresto which is also safe for cats, works on fleas and sandflies too. I haven't used it personally but a UK vet working in France thoroughly recommends it as very effective and uses it on her own cats and dogs too.

I've had a look and there seems to be conflicting advice about whether it's safe to use in greys or not. Obviously ours were fine, I only used it once about 5 yrs ago as we were going somewhere known to have ticks. I think Nettie's the one to ask about ticks as they are an issue when she goes to France. Perhaps you could ask your vet to look into whether it's safe for greyhounds? It kills cats apparently.

You could also look into Bravecto. It's a new treatment and is taken in tablet form. It's expensive, but its effects last for three months. You can get it much cheaper from Vet UK (and Gap gets a percentage if you click through using the link on this thread: greyhoundgap.proboards.com/thread/34929/vet-uk), although you'll need a prescription from your vet first.

Sorry - switched off for a few days due to extreme decorating. There is a problem with flea collars and greys. But I will ask my vet about permethrin and the other recommendations above. He is very approachable but doesn't have specialist greyhound knowledge. While we are away I would prefer not to share our small motorhome with any ticks even if they may be about to die!!! There's only just room for 2 and 2 greys.

Ritab, the collars I am referring to are not over the counter collars but prescription collars.

Are you talking about the Seresto one? I'd certainly be willing to use one if convinced it was safe.

Yes the Seresto one is the one I would use if we spent more time in France especially as it protects against leishmaniasis as well as tick borne diseases and fleas. Its also more economical since it lasts for about 8 months. See how much your vet would charge you for one, check how much they are online, they will be cheaper than the vet but your vet will probably charge you for a prescription so it may work out just a cheap to buy from your vet.
