Hi everyone
I have just booked pebbles and egor their first hydrotherapy session. I'm a little concerned that they don't seem to like water very much. The instructor did say I can get in with them if I think it will help.
Does anyone have any experience with greyhounds and hydrotherapy, I was thinking it will help with their arthritis.

I used Hydrotherapy when Jagger my First Greyhound had to recover to enable him to walk after he had two neck spinal operations at the RVC near Hatfield. It took a little while for him to get use about going into water. He became quite a strong swimmer and found a platform in the floor of the pool to stand on. It took five weeks of four sessions a week for him to become strong enough to walk on all four feet. He still was very weak on his left side but this is the result of spinal ops. The Hydrotherapy centre we went to was near Guildford. You have to ensure it is a fully trained Hydrotherapy centre with its staff fully trained, some people use their own private swimming pool, but I found with one had no Health and Safety standards yet it was recommended by the vets we were using in Bracken. I found the near Guildford one on the internet.

Indy used to have hydrotherapy in the treadmill, we used to go to Hydrovet in Battersea. Before that I took him to a different hydro centre, make sure they are aware that greys easily 'lose their legs in warm water' scary to see but they do recover. Make sure the swims are very short initially.

I've used hydro with my greys and lurchers, try to get a CHA (Canine Hydrotherapy Assoc) one as they have to pass training and have certain standards. Having said that I did use a very good non-registered one for quite a while. The thing to remember is that swimming can be the same effort as a 5 mile run for not many minutes in the pool, I think mine did 2 mins then had a 10 ? Minute rest and another 2 minutes, 10 rest and a final 2 mins at the start - a local Bham pool (not CHA) told me that all greyhounds collapse after swimming - I told him mine didn't and he must be doing too much with them ... and I didn't take mine to him It's brilliant exercise, great for arthritis, recovery from injury etc etc J x Oooh forgot to say none of my greys or lurchers liked the water treadmill/walker, they much preferred swimming and loved it My first grey loved the floats ... cos she just did a great starfish impression and didn't swim ... being a horrible mother I demanded they took the floats off her and she had to swim LOL

Jules, actually I think its something to do with the warmth of the water, have heard of greyhounds collapsing after having a bath that's been a tad too warm, that's warm not hot, happened to Indy once in the bath too and that definitely did not include any energy exertion from him. Their legs just seem to buckle under them.
