Hi, We give Cerys rawhide cigar things to chew on - I gave one to Samson but wow he just bites chunks off easily, I swapped it for a few biscuits and threw it away, was worried he's swallow too big a piece and get ill/cause a blockage!
Do any of you have anything you can recommend for a dog with powerful teeth/jaw? Xxx

I give the dogs Dentastix, which they all bite small pieces off and chew, when Emmadog was around, she tried to swallow it whole , scary stuff, I never gave her another one and continued to make sure all her treats were small sized chunks. She was a total gannet as far as food was concerned, such a quiet girlie but a demon around food and thought nothing of stealing from anyone. I muzzled her because she scavenged, but she continued to shovel up rabbit poo in her muzzle. She caught a frog once and wouldn't let it go, I ended up with a 1 legged frog in my hand, she ate the other one. Sorry I'm hijackin' your thread Don't know what to suggest as an alternative if Samson is that type of eater, sounds like anything he's given, he wants to get down his throat as quickly as possible. I would give him stuff that will break down easily if he does take a large bite.

Dulcie has one dentastick a day I don't like her having rawhide as many years ago my old beagle swallowed almost a whole I had to pull it out it wax stuck in his throat , Obie like bonios and because he only has 6 teeth it lasts him ages

I give my two Hilife Special Care Dental Chews. Daisy is a ferocious chewer but I haven't seen her manage to bite any large chunks off. They last longer than other chews and don't seem to upset Pluto's colitis. Janine x

I can understand your worry-I don't ever give Jay rawhide chews(or pigs ears)because she did exactly the same, she just wolfed down huge chunks-hubby had to pull a piece out of her throat after she choked on it and we decided never again.
I only buy the"Munchy rolls"for her now-(the plain non coloured variety)they are made from shredded rawhide(teeny tiny pieces)that they mix with rice to make a solid chew-she has to chew them properly and they don't go soggy like the rawhide did and pose a choking risk, fingers crossed we have never had any problems since-might be worth a go?

What about some of the bigger fish skin chews from fish4dogs or I get them from Angell petco now. They do huge one called tree trunks. I've stopped rawhide chews too, too scary and pigs ears as well. They have dentasticks but I buy the large ones and break them in half. www.angellpetco.com/fish-treats-for-dogs.html
