Hi, I just wanted to see if anyone has had experience with dealing with a yeast infection. Astra (Astrid) has been chewing her feet for quite a while - almost since we picked her up and it has become rapidly worse in the last 2 months (also possibly after having antibiotics when she had a dew claw removed last month).I'm almost 100% sure it's a yeast infection as her feet have an odd smell - bit like popcorn, stained red with the saliva and look really raw/sore in places. She's also got a sore patch around her back leg and has been licking her bottom a lot. 3 weeks ago I put her on an almost completely biscuit free diet (she's on 95% raw now with a tiny amount of kibble - barely a handful a day - and some days none at all) and started bathing her with an anti-fungal/anti-bacterial wash every other day (with a touch of apple cider vinegar) which has helped her coat and feet to some degree. She's also getting probiotics (with acidophilus) and vitamins (Bionic Biotic) to boost her immune system. She does finally have the best firmest poop ever but it can still be a little slimey (sorry lots of detail during lunchtime!).However, she's still licking/nibbling her paws and still seems generally a bit itchy! She seems fine in herself and has suddenly got tons of energy (may need to start taking the pro-biotics myself soon!) but I wanted some reassurance that I'm doing the right thing and find out if any of this sounds familair. I'm sure it's early days but any advice would be appreciated! Thanks

It might be worth getting your vet to do a skin scrape sample of the affected areas just to double check what it is that's causing her to nibble her paws.

Hi - Yes, thanks I did consider that. Its such a distinctive musty smell though and her whole coat smelt the same when she lost her kennel coat (and was quite oily) before I started the anti-fungal shampoo- and now its fine - just the feet that smell and she nibbles the really smelly ones much more. Trying to treat her from the inside out before I resort to vets and its helped her tummy problems no end. Tried using Calendula cream on them -but madam now likes the taste -at least it'll do no harm! I don't really think it's an environmental allergy/grass allergy as nothing has changed at home and it got much worse after she had a course of the antibiotics. Tricky - at least she now doesn't mind us touching and holding her paws and quite likes a bath - was a real struggle when we first got her!

I too would take her to the vet for a skin scrape - there could be numerous reasons why her skin looks and smells as it does. Better to be safe than sorry, and would save you treating her for something she hasn't got!

It might be worth getting her anal glands checked if she's licking her bottom, my old dog used to chew his feet when his anal glands needed emptying.
Give her a big kiss from us x Sarah

Give her a big kiss from us x Sarah Exactly what I was thinking. My SIL has a schnauzer that was licking/chewing his feet for ages. The vet couldn't crack it, and when she took him to the pooch parlour, they said it could be his anal glands...and it was. Apparently, if they can't get to the area bothering them, they can redirect the focus elsewhere. Maybe the constant licking is then causing a secondary issue with the feet. Deffo worth investigating. My Greta has just had a huge abscess on her anal gland and the only sign was the occasional licking - easily mistaken for grooming, so not always obvious. Hope you ('scuse the pun) get to the bottom of it. xxx

Thank you everyone - she's certainly not starved for attention but will give her some more kisses! I'll let the vet take a look at her glands when I take Luna in for her jabs next week and will go from there.x
