This is on behalf of a good friend.
Her greyhound has a swollen foot, the swelling includes all the toes and goes up to the first leg joint, the area is warm when felt and there is redness, doesn't appear to be any breaks in the skin at all. He is eating well and seems reasonably ok in himself, just not moving about much obviously, not weight bearing on this foot at all now. He is not an off leader and doesn't actualy go far because of an existing back condition. He is already on Previcox and Tramadol for this. She saw the vet yesterday who basically said he must have stood on something hard and badly bruised the foot, just carry on with his current meds.
Could the heat coming from it just be because it is inflamed or could it mean there's an infection of some sort.
She is seeing a different vet tomorrow as it is much worse today.
She has tried cold flannels while he is lying still to try and help the swelling.

That doesn't sound like standing on something does it? Surely he would've screamed to have done that degree of bruising. If it's hot it does sound like an infection or a bite or sting. A well wrapped ice pack or frozen peas would cool it more. Definitely sounds like a 2nd opinion is needed, maybe an x-ray? and if x rayed perhaps shave it to look for punctures? Not a snake area is it? Spider bite? someone I know (person) was bitten by a spider and her whole foot turned purple/red and swelled up past her ankle. The 10p sized raised bump didn't come up for a couple of days. Hope it goes down quickly finger x.

I was thinking he could have trod on a spider or similar, no snakes involved, only the python my friend has, who is kept safely in his tank. He's had an antihistamine but no change, I think x-ray probably tomorrow to check for foreign bodies or a small break maybe. I was quite concerned because it seems so warm to touch, it is more tender on one side.

Hope your friend's dog is doing OK or has got some real treatment if not. It does sound like a sting or bite as others have said and some infection set in.

Today my friends greyhound seemed much improved in that he is now weight bearing a lot more and seemed quite willing to move about, eating well too. But the swelling had not subsided and the area was still warm, so we went to the vets, the new vet who was very nice. She thought he may have trod on something which maybe had pierced the skin or a pad and left dirt or what ever in, which had caused an infection. Got a course of ab's to see if this helps. Hopefully whatever it is will calm down without further intervention, he was definitely quite a happy boy today, so much better than yesterday, so fingers crossed he'll be ok now.

Sounds like he's on the mend now and with antibiotics to aid the reduction of the swelling, there should be a fairly rapid improvement The vets are really good Jacqui - I've been with them for in excess of 40 years and rarely had a fallout with them!!

He could be suffering from Arthritis in the joints which would feel warm to hot to touch with the back of your hand. My Mickey-Finn has Arthritis in both righr legs and loose hips. He is now on Synoquin which if pet insurance will pay for, some will not but PetPlan will provided they do not class it as a pre-existing injury, if covered get it via your vet if not you can buy it on-line without a Vet's prescription. The first 6 weeks it is 3 tablets a day, after that one tablet a day. My vet did place him on Loxicom but these days he only needs the daily one tablet a day of Synoquin, with very intermittent Loxicom. I have also given him a full size human single bed with soft covering, all my other three hounds have accepted that bed is Mickey's who is very often stretched out fully on it especially at night and when we come back from walks although I keep him on the lead when out walking. My vet has said the joint just above the foot in Greyhounds will have been subjected to extreme wear whilst they are racing and can be difficult to repair by lots of vets not experienced in repairing bones and joints.
