My dog has been prescribed half a paracetamol twice a day. She was on carprofen for about four years and it has affected her Kidneys. Is it safe to give Paracetamol to a dog?

My greyhound Herbie was on a paracetamol and codeine tab called Pardale V. It worked very well and he had no side effects. My vet told me that the use of paracetamol in treating animals was being encouraged as it was found to have less side effects than other drugs and provided much better and longer pain relief, as long as it is used in the correct dosage etc. I am sure your vet must be aware of this.

Thank you so much for your reply it has put my mind at ease to know that someone else has experience of using paracetamol for their greyhound. I had heard so many tales of it being lethal for dogs. Elsa is on half a tablet twice a day and has only just started taking it for pain relief.so I hope that it will work for her.
Thanks very much

I know of two dogs who are on paracetamol with no ill effects. They are taking the same dosage as your dog.

We have been prescribed paracetamol for the vets for 2 of our dogs, & neither have had any adverse reactions. We were advised to use it for Grady to reduce his temperature, and to act as pain relief for Fern. We used half a tablet for each, twice a day.

3 of our dogs have been prescribed it at a dose of half a tablet every 8 hours. River was prescribed human over the counter paracetamol and codeine half a tablet twice daily in his latter years as he became unable to stomach anti inflammatories - rimadyl and metacam.
Sapphy had to have tramadol or paracetamol when she was very ill as she was on high dose steroids and anti inflammatories can't be given with steroids (especially not at the dose she was on)
Gracie can only have paracetamol or tramadol as (yawn!) anti inflams irritated her stomach. I think it suits vets to have people think its not safe so they don't home medicate without seeing a vet and getting a proper diagnosis - also I understand that for smaller dogs it's very hard to get the much smaller dose accurate with human sized tablets.
