Piriton

Is it safe to give greyhounds Piriton - I used to to use it on my old dog (staffie/lab) and he was fine with it, also which is best to use liquid or tablets.

Yes it is fine.  I'm not sure though about tablet or liquid form.

I've used tablet form only previously, 1 tablet twice daily (weight around 20-25kg) - but worth a quick check with your vet for the correct dose.

Thanks I was unsure which to use as I've only used the syrup before.Will check with the vet as to dose.

Vet gave Maddie the standard ones you buy, not Piritese, just the Piriton allergy ones that contain 4mg of chlorphenamine maleate (phew!)a few wks ago and said if they work to buy more from the chemist, just never mention they're for a dog or they won't sell them to you! She has just 1 a day and weights 28/29k.

Thanks I did have a quick look in the supermarket tonight and there was no Piriton only Piriteze and I wondered what the difference was.

Tesco have an own brand equivalent (called Tesco Allergy Relief) which is much cheaper than Piriton. Contains the 4mg of chlorphenamine maleate .

Ahh, I'd looked for a generic version but wasn't in Tesco and they didn't have any wherever I was. It has helped Maddies grass allergy, she get nasty spots on her tummy from it.

I've used Piriton for both 30k greyhound and 18k terrier (1 a day each) but usually have to ask for it over the counter as it doesn't seem to be on the open shelves in our local chemists. Never sure if other brands were the same so I stick to Piriton itself which I know definitely works.

I think it's because it's an old antihistamine isn't it.

Mayo's been having 3 doses a day every Autumn for a few years now.  He gets very itchy, usually towards the end of August and we think it's probably a leaf mould allergy.  As he takes it so regularly, I now buy it in bulk from here

As I usually pay almost £2 for a packet of 28, this works out much cheaper   Have used Pharmacy First a few times now for myself and the furries and been very happy with their service and prices.

According to our pharmacist it is because it makes you drowsy.

Can't say I've noticed it making our dogs drowsy to be honest but I suppose as they've only been itchy since it was really hot and the heat makes them sleepy anyway, it's difficult to tell. Now it's cooler only terrier girl Izzy has the Piriton and she is quite lively again now it's not so hot.
