Over the last month or so my beautiful girl has started leaking urine. I took her to the vets and had her checked out, she has no infections and the vet didn't seem overly concerned saying her 'accidents' could be down to behaviour. He's a really exprienced grey vet too so I took his word. Anyway it's getting worse and the poor girl doesn't know she's doing it so I'm gonna ring tomorrow and make an appointment to take her back. I know some people on another page have mentioned incontinence issues due to spaying. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this and if they have any advice please x

Your vet may be experienced but I'd say that sounds exactly like spay incontinence which is easily treated and I'm surprised it wasn't suggested. My bridge girl Trixie started with it around 6 and Maddie has had it for a couple of years. It's easily treated with either propalin drops or Urilin drops which is slightly cheaper. Alternatively a short course of Incurin tablets which is HRT can help stop it for a while. Currently Maddie is on Incurin as the Urilin wasn't quite enough so she'll have them for a month then hopefully she'll settle back onto her Urilin. It can seem quite scary initially but you get used to it. We've always been given a maximum and a minimum amount and vary the dose between the two depending how well controlled it. Good luck!

Spay incontinence is not uncommon.....is there any specific reason why your vet thinks the problem is behavioural? You say she's 'leaking' rather than obviously urinating in front of you, so to my mind that would be more likely infection or spay incontinence rather than behavioural and you've ruled out infection. If it is spay incontinence its easily controlled with medication

He said behavioural as she has been shredding too. To be fair to him I did initially think it was too as she has been a little bugger recently! Can you give me a rough idea how much these meds cost and also how long they last for please, just so I know when I go!

So when/how is the urinating occurring?

It's been the occasional accident but mainly when she is laid on her bed x

Ok......again yes, I would be suspicious of spay incontinence as my understanding is that it occurs when the muscles are relaxed

Here is a link to propolin drops, you will need a prescription from your vet but ask him for a 6 month prescription which he will charge for but once you submit the prescription online you can purchase the meds online month by month until the prescription is filled when you will need a new one. Ask your vet how much he charges for the meds he prescribes and then compare the prices online and choose the best price. www.animeddirect.co.uk/search/all/propalin/relevance?gclid=CO2Ur9zz9L4CFSjpwgodnakAIASent from my Hudl HT7S3 using proboards

I'd buy a small one from your vet first just to make sure it works for her rather than paying the prescription charge just in case that isn't it then as Nettie says work out which is the cheapest way to do it. I think I pay about £13 for a small bottle of Urilin for Maddie and it lasts around 3 mths, she's 28k so its not bad at all. Obviously the larger one would work out cheaper except I think you're supposed to use it within 3 mths of opening and Maddie wouldn't have that much. She has 10-16 drops twice a day, I can vary the dose depending how she is so she is on the lowest effective amount.

You know when you say she's been shredding, has it been her bed? Maddie will try to cover it up if she realises she's dripped or made a wet patch. Does she smell of wee under her tail or sometimes you can smell it on Maddies mouth as she's tried to lick herself clean It does often happen overnight when they've been relaxed.

That's what I can't understand, it never happens at night. Only in an evening I'm taking her to the vet tomorrow morning x

Eva used to leak. Most often when she was tired. Used to lick her wet flank lots when she did it. It was reasonably well controlled with Urilin and we also recently discovered wet dog mats from Jacob's Den that soak up the urine.
Urinary incontinence tends to result in damp patches where they've been sleeping. Deliberate weeing isn't usually in their beds. Eva used to be worse in the evening, rather than overnight. It isn't anything they can help, but the drugs work well.

I have just read this thread as Nell has wet a few times during this last week. She is only doing it during the day when she is asleep. She has been drinking loads more water due to the heat and doesn't know she is doing it bless her. Is this spay incontinence? She will be eleven in September x
