Anything that can be given to help upset tummy?

Hi

Layla has had bad diarrhea since Saturday am. I thought I had sorted it by changing her food back to Wainrights turkey and rice kibble on Sunday. It seemed like it had started to firm up her stools, only to have a complete reversal a few hours later. I have stopped all treats and additions, so she is on the basic kibble alone now, but it has not made any noticeable difference.

She is booked into vets tomorrow and I am going to fast her until tomorrow morning at least now (I heard that can help), but does anyone know anything I can give her proven to help in short term?

She has me getting up every 30-60 minutes during the night needing to go outside. What with her recovering from meningitis and my struggle to get weight back on her, this is the last thing she needs the poor lamb

Hi kevin, when Molly was recovering from having her spleen removed she came down with gastroenteritis. The vet advised small amounts of boiled chicken and rice and no treats. I'm not sure if this just gave her tum a rest whilst the bug was still active but it did help. Molly always had been prone to a dodgy tum and we did give her probiotics in her food for a while and they also helped. She is more robust these days- unless she gets her paws on the butter dish! Good luck and I'm sure this will pass. Poor Layla has had a really tough time bless her.

May not help on this occasion but I swear by Pro-Kolin, always keep some in the drawer and give a dose at first signs of the runs. You can get it on line, Vet UK and other suppliers sell it, wouldn't be without it.

Pro Kolin is fab stuff and I'm another one who always keeps a tube in the house.  I get mine from www.animeddirect.co.uk/protexin-pro-kolin-paste-syringe-30ml.html and a 30ml syringe is usually sufficient.
Another good product is slippery elm powder.  Make it into a paste (a teaspoon of powder absorbs a LOT of water) and then either allow the patient to lap it up or syringe into them.  It's a very old fashioned remedy, but as with so many of them, it works   I buy mine online as I use it as a daily supplement for Mayo anyway, but you can get capsules from Holland & Barrett.

I usually feed Mayo and Daisy on plain boiled white fish and plain mashed potatoes to settle tums, but that's because Mayo is intolerant to chicken and I'm fussy about storing cooked rice due to the potentially high bacteria levels in it.

Hope Layla picks up soon poor girl's due a change in fortune for the better.

Seconding the slippery elm! It's fantastic stuff. Scrambled eggs also work well for Gunner when he has dodgy guts. Hope Layla feels better soon!

Thanks all. That Pro-kolin syringe sounds like the stuff they gave me to give to her when I got her back from her first bout of chemo. Wish I'd paid more attention! Have ordered some online but as going to vets later no doubt they will give me something.

She has fasted now for 20 hours and it hasn't made a great difference except to the amount of poo being generated. What she does is still very runny. But at least it allowed her to go 2 hours+ between toiletting last night.

Have fed her a small amount of cooked chicken this morning, so we'll see what effect that has on her.

Anyone used Canikur tablets? Came across it on search for Pro-kolin. They do the same thing but got a lot of good reviews.

I find Kaogel most effective - not sure if it needs a prescription or not ....

No it doesn't, vet uk etc usually stock it.  I have both that and pro-Kaolin in but I find kaogel is best given outside as we always end up with it dribbling or being spat out if we're not careful!

I'll second steamed white fish and boiled potatoes - chicken and rice don't help mine. But don't put milk in your mash - I use a bit of Flora.

Mine both have rice and fish, and to start with hard boiled eggs with rice, seems to do the trick every time.x

I am having similar issues with duke at the moment. He can't tolerate rice or chicken so its white fish and boiled potatoes for him when it starts. I read on line about using a mix of grated apple, slippery elm and colloidal silver. I have ordered all the bits for this but I must admit that I am nervous as its was on a racing greyhound forum so am not 100% certain whether this is used with the dogs best interest in mind or as a quick fix to get them running again. Duke has always been a sensitive lad and the rescue found it hard to find a food he could tolerate and settled him on burgess sensitive but even this is now causing issues. He had a bad tum bowt 6 weeks ago which meant a vets trip and its been intermittent since . I am currently looking for a long term new food if anyone has any ideas - needs to be hypoallergenic no wheat gluten dairy soya etc and not chicken flavour. Hope your grey picks up, you have my sympathy . They must be kindred spirits at the moment xx

Sorry to hear about Rudy. It seems Greyhound tummies live in the twilight zone. Weird and mysterious. It might be worth you starting your own post about Rudy, as not everyone will be reading this one.

As for Layla, we have a different girl today. It seems my fasting her for 24 hours and then small portions of cooked chicken did the trick. She slept all night through. Yay, result!

Her poo this morning was still pretty poor but it was better then before. I have put her back on Wainrights Turkey and Rice kibble, which she ate up, both this morning and tonight, so pretty pleased about that. She has not been for a poo since this morning, so assume the bug she had has passed through her. Will be happier once she has had a few more poos and we see how they are.

I picked up some pro-kolin from vet last night and started her on it this morning just to play safe. So fingers crossed my little girl looks like getting over whatever has upset her.

Now just to finish the steroids and hope the meningitis stays away, but so far so good.
