So far the thunder shirt hasnt worked, and this has now led to separation anxiety paulx Oh dear time for the vets? would be good to get him onto something before NY - although do you hear fireworks out there? Maddie has had other long term meds before the xanax, nothing that knocked her out, but that's been best for her.

So far the thunder shirt hasnt worked, and this has now led to separation anxiety paulx On no!! I'm so sorry you are having all this trouble, and poor poor Andy getting in such a state. It must be absolutely exhausting for you to deal with. I can't think of anything else you can try, other than moving house to somewhere that isn't near farmers fields, but that might be a bit drastic considering he's with you on foster! Joking aside, it's obviously a very serious problem. I hope someone more experienced and knowledgable than me comes along soon to offer you some help and advice.

Yes looks like a trip to the vets we dont have fireworks nearby and dont hear any inside so we are lucky there]. i cant even go the other side of a dog gate into the kitchen without him screaming and barking, even though he can see me.if i close the door its even worse, although he will stay in another room and i can go to a different room and leave the door open and he is fine , one crazy mixed up boy .so it is back to basics, although this will spoil things for the others and they are getting left out. paulx

Paul why is the gas gun going off? Do the farmers have stuff growing at this time of year? We're having problems with Delta as we can hear shooting from our house, yesterday we literally just got outside the door and two bangs went off, Delta shook from head to toe to we left her home with Matt, the day before she heard a bang on our walk and I literally had to drag her home. Its just awful for them isn't it. Willow is just weird, she is the one terrified of fireworks but doesn't seem bad when she hears bangs on a walk, Delta doesn't seem bothered with fireworks but bangs outside freak her out. I've just come back from doing Flag and its like Beirut up there, can hear faint bangs here so not sure if we'll get Delta out with us, will try and take her in the car somewhere away from it all.

I know you were reluctant to go down the medication route as you do not want him to be dependent on meds long term, but a consideration worth noting is that Xanax doesn't necessarily need to be given for too long a period. Kobi has had Xanax for a few years for his fear of fireworks, and over the years it has desenticised him so much that he copes amazingly well now with a problem that could literally have killed him before the Xanax. He only has 2 tablets on bonfire night. If Andy is started on Xanax on a normal dose for a few days, then reduce it down, over a few weeks he would hopefully become so relaxed that the guns shouldn't bother him anymore. I realise that you have to now sort out the SA that has come up again too, but the Xanax might be worth a try when you are back on track with that. good luck and for Andy

Paul I have only just seen this. Yes vets message Nettie and either Xylkene which I prefer to Xanax but Xanax might be a better choice. Leave the thundershirt on. Relax and don't make a big deal of it for a few days and once the medication is in place we can start to work with him. It might be worth seeing if he will hop in the car and nip out for a short walk elsewhere for a few days to try and get him to toilet. Make sure early morning and after dark you are really re inforcing the house training with him and if you have a crate set it up and make it very den like with a covered blanket so he can do and take himself away. Be very careful not to get to hung up on it with him or things will get worse and try not to make a fuss or offer to much reassurance as hard as that is

Paul sorry the problem is getting worse at the moment. With Tia I found strangely that although I do let her cuddle with me when fireworks are going off and she can here them in home , out and about with the gas guns or shoots she is much calmer when I totally ignore her fear and chill out. It was very hard at first especially when I had to carry her from the car but once walking and seeing the others not afraid she was much better. I wouldn't have dared let her off lead of course. I realise this is on your own property but maybe after a while he'll let you walk him around on collar and lead.

Maddie was similar to Andy. She arrived as a foster just after bonfire night and was fine over new year so it was a huge shock when she was so bad come november. I felt as if I must have done something wrong but then the rescue told me she was picked up over bonfire night and then came into season almost immediately in kennels so I guess being on the streets as they were going off must have affected her.
Initially she had other meds, I'll pm you if you want to know more.

Paul - Kizzie is on Zylkene.I too was reluctant to go down the medication route but it is really effective with her - you know the difference if we accidently run out.Just in general it seems to take the edge of her demons enough for her to enjoy life more.Plus she has her Thundershirt and Chris does T-touch if she gets really stressed.Sometimes it's hard to work out what spooks her.Fireworks OK as long as she 1 of us here. She can hear the gas guns on the golf course - but it's the displaced crows she objects to.Today the next neighbours are having windows replaced which she's taken offence at.So she has her shirt on and is a lot more settled.9 years down the line and still a work in progress. It's just so hard to accept how somebody could so screw up a dog's life - those 1st 3 years caused so much lasting damage. And now at 12/13 suppose we've got a crotchety granny. She's spoiled rotten and we try to go with what she wants. At least( no at most)you gave her the chance to do what she was born to do - and boy did she fly!Keep trying Paul - the combination could work for Andy too.Sorry for the rambling - Cath.
