Firstly a warm hello to everyone, I have been shadowing these forums leain up to the adoption of our Greyhound and thought I would finaly log in and say Hi aswell as ask for some advice.
Got our new Greyhound Mikey yesterday, gorgeous guy that he is. We are following or think we are following all the advice for new home dwellers from the forum. not fussing, being hands off etc. Today is his second day in the house.
Day one I thought went well but I want to check I arent making mistakes. He is sleeping in the kitchen in a bed, I didnt want to go down the cage route, while I dont dissagree with that method I just dont like the idea personaly. So bed in the kitchen baby gate on the kitchen door.
On his first entry to the home we let him out and he went for a week in the garden straight away which we praised with a treat. We walked him, he was great on the lead and a pleasure to walk, Weed numerous times on the walk. Then back home where we just pottered around the kitchen doing what we normaly would and not trying to pay him too much attention.
When my partner had to leave for work Mikey was fine because I was still there. I decided to try the method of leaving him alone in the kitchen for a short time, then returning and not making a deal over it, extended the time a few times, he didnt like the fact I left but didnt seem to play up.
I then had to leave the house for an hour, so thinking he had done well so far I left and upon return he had messed on the floor, an amazing amount it was too!
not thinking this was too wierd for his first day I cleaned it up, didnt fus, let him out in the yard for a wander where he again weed. and started the process again.
Bed time arrived, put him in the kitchen in his bed and went upstairs. He whimpered a couple of times which I ignored, then howled and barked, I told him to get in his bed, which he did, he then slept through the night. I was happy to come down this morning to no mess or wee.
Took him for his walk morning of day two, he weed but didnt mess. Came home had a cup of tea, popped him in the kitchen and went to work. When my partner got up he found Mikey had messed in the kitchen again. he spent a couple of hours in the house before also heading to work.
Mikey was alone for 3 hours, when i returned at lunch he had weed on the curtains (Bloody good aim) which is no big deal so I cleaned it up and took him outside. I did notice however he was massively excited to see me trying to jump up next to me but I just acted like it wasnt a big deal coming home and carried on pottering in the kitchen.
I bumped into the neighbour when I left him again, I asked if he had been barking which he had but I said not loudley at all and not a problem which was good to hear.
So now he is alone again
Ill be home at 3 as I dont work far away but Am I doing the righ things, my personal reaction is that its only day two and this should be expected, but I just hope and woudl love confirmation I am not doing anything really stupidly wrong haha
Thanks for reading if you got this far
