Our beautiful greyhound, Peter, caught his paw in the dog gate three weeks ago, and was limping. The first vet treated him with antiinflammataries, and told us to return if he didn't improve. He didn't, and one toe was swollen. 2nd vet took X-rays, diagnosed a dislocation of the top toe joint, and splinted the foot. We returend twice to have the splint checked, but he didn't remove the bandage. we arrranged to see him again after his holiday. The foot began to smell, so we returned to original vet. She passed him on to a more senior vet, and the rebandaging took an hour, which I thought was odd. When we returned for a check on Friday, the vet removed the dressing in front of us, and I was horrified - there is a large ulcer on his ankle, and small sores on three toes. In other words, the splint has caused more damage thant the original injury :-( Today Peter has chewed through the dressing, and all the wounds look just as bad. I am devastated. I have redressed using dressings from our first aid box. We see the second vet (who splinted the foot) tomorrow morning. I really feel I would prefer to continue the dressings myself, so I can see exactly what is going on. If I had had any idea that this could happen, I would never have agreed to the splinting :-(

Poor Peter-you must be seething, I know I would be. Hope he soon recovers now that you are fully aware of the extent of his injury and dealing with it yourself. Sending lots of healing thoughts his way.

Well, we're back from our visit to the vet. Needless to say, he was very upset about what had happened, too. However, the good news is that there is a significant improvement since yesterday. so the main wound only needs a very lightly bandaged non-adherent dressin. :-) I am so relieved!

Exactly the same happened to Molly. The vet bandaged a wound badly and she ended up with a huge open sore and even now she is left with a swelling that we had to have tapped to rule out anything serious. Another vet in the same practice more or less told us it was caused by poor bandaging. Gggrrrrrr. In the end lots of care and a fair bit of flamazine and we got her sorted but I still won't see that particular vet.

Hope your boy's wounds are a lot better now,we used to bandage and keep an eye on our dog's hurts when she had been to the vets with dew claw problems after running round in the snow!

The large sore is slowly healing, with daily dressings. There was a white area in the centre of the sore which, according to the vet, was a tendon. :-( Thankfully that's now covered with granulation tissue. Unfortunately the waterproof boot supplied by the vet rubbed the other side of his paw, causing a sore there. :-( Thankfully we picked that up straight away, so now Peter has dressings on both sides of his paw...However I feel we're nearly there, we're due at the vets again on Monday, so I'm hoping he will be discharged. Thank you so much for your concern.
