I'm feeling quite upset. I took Solo and Betty for a toddle round the block about an hour ago, and as we were coming up the road a dog started barking at us from a front room window. I had a quick glance at it but continued walking. Next thing, I heard this dog's barks turn into a scream and shot my head round to see a man picking it up by it's neck and thumping it over the head. It was a medium - large possibly crossbreed and he just dragged it by the neck out of the room, thumping it all the way. I had to carry on walking as Solo was getting a bit uptight at the noise, but I had to fight every instinct in my body to go and bang the door down. It's on my road but I don't know these people. I feel I need to do something but I don't know what would be best for the dog. I could either go to the house myself and have a word (I don't know how I would put it but I'd try not to be confrontational), or I could report it to the RSPCA (with the knowledge that they probably won't do anything). Either way though I'm worried that the guy will take it out on the dog. Or do I just try to forget about it and hope that it was a one off? Any thoughts / experiences would be greatfully recieved.

I would report it or go to the house with a baseball bat. This sort of abuse makes me see red. Poor dog x

Report it to RSPCA and your local animal welfare officer. That made me feel physically sick.

Report it to the RSPCA. If nothing else, they should visit the house and make the occupants aware that their vile behaviour has been witnessed. Poor dog Moira x

I wouldn't go to the door as the man could well be very aggressive towards you. Let the RSPCA go and face him.

Thanks for the responses folks. I'll be reporting him. I felt I needed to, but I just hesitated because I didn't want the dog to get an extra beating for it. I suppose it might be the lesser of two evils though.

I agree, report it. Cruel, horrible bastard! Don't worry about causing the dog an extra beating Sarah, if the man's that way inclined he'd be beating the poor thing for some other reason anyway At least you're sticking your neck out and doing something positive for the dog

What a horrendous thing for you to witness, it is bad enough just reading about it. What a vile, vile man, the poor dog must live in constant fear. Hope he gets some sort of come-upence. I know what you mean about being worried what will happen if you report it but now you have seen it, I guess you have to at least try to help the dog or it will haunt you. Do people like this just have a dog so they can feel powerful and take all their bad temper out on them? Wish the dog did stand up for itself but I guess it is always going to lose.

Some scumball round here is appearing in court for beating his rottie around the head in the street. If I witnessed what you saw, as well as reporting the thug, I would tell all the frendly locals too. Please don't just walk away - this doesn't seem like a one off to me.

Reported to the RSPCA. I'll contact the council dog warden tomorrow. I really hope they do something to help the poor dog. I'm going to be watching that house every time I walk past. I'll probably get a visit from the police for suspicious behaviour! Just as an aside, not that it's really relevant, but when I walked past today to check the number of the house before I reported it I noticed they have a Porsche and a BMW on the drive! It might be worth saying my street is just a regular suburban 3-bed semi type street which doesn't normally have this sort of car parked on the drive. I don't know why but this made me even more mad. Perhaps because it makes me think that these people must be relatively well educated or at least socially adept in order to be in a position to afford those type of cars, and perhaps niavely I make the assumption that it's only stupid people that abuse animals. I suppose anyone can be cruel though. Rant over!

Was about to make the same suggestion as Lisa, maybe report them HMRC for good measure.
