Brooke scratched her ear this morning then shook her head and started crying, I couldn't see anything wrong but she was obviously in pain, within an hour I could feel what I think it a haematoma in her ear - just wondered if anyone could offer any advice. I will ring the vet first thing but just wondered what my options are?

Poor Brooke, vets is the one to sort it I think. If it's a haematoma then the pressure would be quite painful I'd say. Years ago my GSD had one on his ear, it was drained and he was fine, the ear was a bit wrinkled where it had been but no lasting problems.
Good luck at the vets x

Thanks have rung the vets and can't get in till this afternoon, but they did say they wouldn't drain it today - it has to be left 24 hours so that the blood vessel can stop bleeding, but I asked for painkillers as we all know how pain resistant greys are!and of course they won't give me those without seeing her - hence the appointment this afternoon.

Our GSD x had one years ago, came up like a cushion vet gave ab's and pain meds initially but it didn't go down so they had him in and slit the underside and drained it. It filled up again but this time it went down after a few days with meds and that was it, no further problems. Hope it gets fixed quickly

My friends whippet has this in both ears (not at the same time). They had to be drained and stitched with several rows of stitches to stop it refilling. She's got the silliest curly ears now

Thank you for all your kind thoughts for Brooke - she is much improved tonight (typical when she had a vets appointment) when I got home from work she looked much brighter but her ear was still a bit swollen, so took her to the vets who said she may have damaged a blood vessel in her ear but it looked more like inflammation, so he gave her a steroid injection and said if she doesn't improve in a couple of days to go back. She was very brave when she had the injection and didn't even flinch. And she resisted the temptation to eat the 2 grossly overweight cocker spaniels in the the waiting room. Fingers crossed she will now be ok.

Glad she's feeling better I use Arnica tabs at 30c strength ... I give 6xtabs four times a day (every 4 hours if I can work it for a couple of days or until the lump is shrinking and then go to 6 twice a day ... I'm sure you know but just in case .. tip the tabs into the lid and into the dogs mouth so you don't touch them and don't feed 20 mins either side of giving the tabs You can give other remedies after 5 mins of another Boots should keep Arnica in stock J xx
