Harrys appetite is not what it used to be which in part is probably down to his nose problem which after being cleared gor aspergillosis we decided not to investigate further as after discussing it with the vet radiation/chemo was not an option we wanted to go down if it was found to be a tumour . Does anyone have any ideas to keep weight on we are giving fish and tinned mear sx? sn addition

When Dickie looks like he is losing a bit of weight we get him some tripe from the butchers, slice it up and stick it in with his kibble - he loves it and it seems to help get weight back on. Sending hugs to Harry

I reckon Sue (andywillow) should be able to give you some ideas. She was on a mission to get some weight on Roy recently Helen x

Get some cheap mince (higher fat content) and mix with oats, oil and eggs, bake in a loaf tin and slice it up. It worked wonders on Juno, Roy also had it but I think now it was down to his Cushings Disease and once on meds he's gained weight nicely now.
I think I used to use about 500g mince, just a glug of oil (vegetable oil), mug full of oats and about 3 eggs.
And the added bonus is that they all loved it!

Thanks Will give the mince a go. Do you have to cook tripe or give it raw? I remember my mum cooking it for our dog and am heaving just thinking about it!!!!!!

I once bought some tripe from Pets at Home for one of our oldies and tried her with it raw, she gave me the most disgusting look and walked away I used to cook it for them and yes it was absolutely vile!

Oil is usually good as its got loads of calories in a small amount, there've been a few scares about (human) vegetable oil so I'd feed either organic veg oil or a salmon oil and introduce it gradually so it doesn't cause the squits Maybe add a bit of chopped liver just cooked so the smell tempts him and split his food into three or four feeds so he's never full but you can add a bit more food to his daily allowance Some of the receipes from A La Bark Baking book by Kris Owen are very tempting and you could add a bit of cheese too ... If you feed a complete then Burns do ones with Maize which is a very fattening cereal and you could use it for treats or in a Kong so he doesn't realise he's eating Good luck Julie x

Mine all eat green tripe raw but don't like it cold from the fridge so I blast it in the microwave for a few seconds to take the chill off, in fact mine won't eat any of their raw meat unless the chill has been taken off.

Anything that's fattening for us must be for dogs too ....... potato, fatty mince, brown bread, oily fish (ie sardines or tuna, both in sunflower oil) etc.
