Just wondered which were the best as preventatives and if there were any to avoid? Thanks

Mine had to be wormed quite often when I first adopted them. I use Drontal, and if they have worms then a further dose 2 weeks later. I have read on here that worms are pretty much a standard problem when the dogs first come out of kennels. This time I have gone nearly 3 months and no signs - so hopefully it will just be every 3 months now.
You have to watch they don't sniff or eat anything wormy, keep them clear of fleas, and worm every 3 months.
That's about all you can do.

My grey had to have a lot of worming when I got her .. typical greyhound Even my homeopathic vet tells me to use chemical wormers but I send a dog poo sample to Wormcount.co.uk (or Wormcount.com I forget which) and they analyse it for all worms and if I pay another £6 they check for lungworm. Lungworm is spreading in the UK but it doesn't sound as widespread as vets and worm companies would like us to think I buy one which does as many worms as possible. Julie x

I use Cestem from Vet UK - it has the same active ingredients as Drontal Plus but is cheaper.

I use Milbamax and Advocate. Hate what it must contain, but hate lungworm more.

My horse vet said the worm count is unreliable, no reason for him to lie to me as I don't buy my wormers from him. I have used drontal, Joe was sick once with it but I do them midday now with a small treat rather than with a meal and he's fine with that. I have used cesteem too, I've just got some prowormer from vetuk which I used last time.

I imagine this is for the same reason as worm counts are unreliable for goats - the theory is that a low or zero count doesn't necessarily mean there are no worms, just that no worms were found. That said, if you get a high count, then it is reliable confirmation that they are there.
