Im looking after a greyhound for a while. Hes lovely, very calm, loving completely cat friendly. Hes been here before on day care.He had a massive exciting game with my Milly (whippet x) and they both zoomed all over the garden, chasing in and out of the house. I noticed blood on the sofa, and thro the hall, and after muzzling Jack, he seems to be missing a claw from the back paw (prev dislocated from racing). Hes made no screams/noise and has been licking it. Ive popped some cornflour on it, dressed and bandaged and popped a boot on. Its stopped bleeding, but will he need vet care anti-bs tomorrow, or is it normal to loose a claw now and again? I feel awful, his moms v v stressed at the mo, , so will tell her tomorrow. anyone got any ideas, should he see my vet?

Noel lost a claw off his back foot too in similar circumstances but it didn't seem to trouble him, I only noticed it after seeing the blood trail too. I took him to the vet who wanted to make sure that the whole claw had come out clean and didn't have part still in otherwise he would have pulled the rest out so it couldn't cause any problems. Fortunately it had already come out clean and complete so there was no further treatment required. It grew back quite quickly again but at a slight angle from before.

Umm as a wicked mother I don't bother when mine (Charlie) loses a claw .. I did ring my vet and he said just bathe it in salt water for a few days and keep an eye on it but it should heal without a problem ... it did J x

Gracie lost one and as it healed ok I didn't go to the vets at the time. A few weeks later it started to hurt her and the vet said as she'd done it she'd broken a sliver off the end of the bone too and she had inflammation of the bone in the end of her toe. He said it is quite common. It bothered her on and off for a long time and we almost had her toe removed but it settled down eventually. It used to grow a sort of deformed stubby nail which always fell off and that was when it hurt her the most. It's stopped growing now and doesn't seem to bother her. After that experience I think it's always worth keeping a close eye on lost nails although taking her to the vet wouldn't have made a difference to the nail regrowing. However ab's might have stopped the osteomyelitis happening. Hope it's ok

thanks everyone, Ill keep an eye for a day or two. hes feeling a bit sorry for himself, and giving me sad looks, because hes muzzled to prevent licking/chewing the boot off. Im not letting them do zoomies for a bit, they'll have to make do with Battersea dogs home. (on the telly-not for them to go in). Thanks again, feel re-assured.
