I have an 8 year old ex racer who last year developed a bony lump on her front leg. It was diagnosed as arthritis but has recently got worse as she is very stiff when she gets out of her bed and limps a bit. She has a few drops of cod liver oil in her breakfast but I haven't put her on anything else at the moment nor have I taken her to the vet. She is still running around but tends to trip on cornering. Should I just get her checked out by the vet or does anyone have any recommendations on what I could give her? Many thanks - Ann

Bony lumps in greyhounds big no no! If she has not been x rayed please get her in now. Oesteosarcoma is a massive killer in greyhounds and if it is bone cancer you need to know asap x Please keep us posted as its not necessary the automatic death sentence anymore. I dont want to worry you and it may be nothing but bony lumps on greyhounds legs should not be ignored x Make sure you have a good savy greyhound vet who understands this

If your vet diagnosed it as arthritis and hasn't done a 'follow up' or offered to x ray her as she's still limping or even offered pain relief I'd either have strong words with her/him and demand an x-rays (don't be put off with pain killers - Lisas right) and asap or I'd change my vet - like Lisa says try to find a greyhound savvy one as osteo is all too common and can start with a bony lump.
All crossed it's something else.

As the owner of a lurcher who had osteo (diagnosed 2 years ago today) I would advise you to go to the vets ASAP

Thanks Lisa, julie, Deborah and Gilli
She was xrayed last year which only showed the arthritis. She has been fine since then - no limping. Two weeks ago we stayed in a hotel with her which had very steep stairs to our room and she has been suffering since jumping up and down them. I am going to book her in next week at the vets. Will let you know the outcome.
Many thanks Ann

Hi Ann All crossed she's just knocked a sore bit .. I killed my knee by walking up and down a short steep hill at a dog show last year so hopefully it's those stairs ..there's a few threads on supplememnts if it is arthritis and I use a chiropractor (McTimoney trained) and accupuncture to help my dogs Good luck Julie
