Storm, still has quite alot of staining on his fur around his mouth and front legs, is there anything that will help remove it or will we have to wait for it to shed out? (Looking adt the rest of him I dont think its his natural colour!) Helen

Izzy, one of my cavaliers, always had problems with tear staining (It seems to be genetic, as the other three were fine, yet his mum also stained) and I looked into lots of ways to clear it up.I tried various brands of cleaner (including Diamond Eye-obviously these not being suitable for mouth areas) with no effect and reading information from Westie sites (that breed being very prone to staining), only found one recommendation, that being a USA product that cost over £6, plus huge postage, for a pot the size of an eyeshadow containeer.
Some people suggested homemade potions, whose contents I thought risky,so I went with the advice that you were stuck with it,unless the stains were caused by a skin infection, so just wash and dry, regularly, which does slightly decrease the intensity of the stain and makes the dog more comfortable.

Just make sure there is no redness in the skin folds, as that could mean infection.

Helen, it tends to happen on older dogs, Indy's fur went a rusty colour around his mouth as he aged and Rio is the same, I think its caused by their saliva so all the washing in the world isn't going to remove. I'm guessing the colouring on his legs are in places where he may have licked/dribbled?
