Hi all,
Just wanted some advice, my hound ( Alex ) has started to limp, this started 2 days ago, I can't see anything physical, so wondering if it could be arteritis? he will be 5 in June..
I have put off going to the vets, as in Dec last year he cut his paw on glass while on a walk, so still had medicine left over from that ( meloxicam ) I stated giving him that last night, so I will see how that fairs for now.. But he is clearly in pain tho!
I can't see how he could have pulled it/sprained, defiantly no cuts..
Merci beaucoup
Max

Hi Max, it really could be any number of things but if Alex seems to be in a lot of pain I think you need to get him to the vet. I would hope that as he's only 5 it is just a sprain or strain, but unfortunately as I'm sure you know bone cancer is very common amongst greyhounds and sadly even those as young as 5. We've lost two greyhounds to it, one was only 7 and the other just turned 8 and both started with sudden limping and pain. If nothing else a visit to the vet and an x-ray if need be will set your mind at rest that it's nothing as bad as that and hopefully Alex will be right as rain in no time. Good luck and do let us know how you get on and we'll be keeping our fingers crossed that he's soon back to normal. Sian .

Hi Max, me again! Just saw your other post about how Alex doesn't mind you feeling his foot and forgot to say before that they can be very stoic and don't often say much especially when it's serious! I always know with my dogs that if something happens and they scream the place down it's usually nothing bad but when they're deathly quiet I know it's going to be bad! Both of our dogs with cancer never made a sound when they were being examined either by us or the vet so just because Alex seems ok with you touching him doesn't neccessarily mean he isn't feeling pain. Sian.

Hi Sian, Your dog in your pic looks very much like Alex, almost identical Well this is why I'm not sure about it, as when he cut his paw in Dec he wouldn't let me near it, right down to bathing it.. I would have to muzzle him. But with this injury he will let me prod around, so I have no idea where the pain is coming from.. I did notice, a few weeks ago, he would be laying in bed with me, and just scream out as if in pain, I just put it down at the time of him wanting attention.. so perhaps it's related. I have just taken him out, as he is injured I didn't take him far, armed myself with some dog sausages and he was running around like a good'un.. I really hope it's not bone cancer, but i shall definitely take him to the vets tomorrow..

Hi, my greyhound girl went racing across the lawn to chase the cat and came back limping, she hadn't made a sound, just limped. The next day she was still not putting weight on her foot and holding it up, so off we went to the vet. He took one look at it and diagnosed a chipped bone in her ankle area. One operation later, a huge bill, and she is still ON LEAD, even for a wee in the garden - this was 6 weeks ago - total nightmare, the vet said the wound has healed but he doesn't want her going loony running around off lead just yet so we have another week on lead everywhere, she is like a coiled spring and wants to run run run. So good luck with your boy and hope it is nothing serious.

Hi Max, how's Alex today? Let us know how you get on at the vet and fingers crossed it's something simple to fix! Sian.

He seems fine at the moment, back to his usual cheeky self. The medication seems to have worked. I will monitor him, but it could have been just a sprain.

That's great news Max. You must be relieved that it wasn't anything serious after all and I'm glad Alex is feeling much better. Sian.
