greyhounds and border collies

Well here's one greyhound who likes the company of collies.....




But then I do admit... he's not quite your average normal greyhound is he!!




Here he is again with one of his best mates Codie the collie... they love to run around the beaches.







They even share food nicely together..





But I do understand that some dogs, not just greyhounds dont like the herding instinct in the collies, it can be overwhelming and seen as threatening behaviour. I just wish that more collie owners understood that other dogs can be apprehensive around them if they do go into herding mode.

Codie the collie also likes to herd, but Herbie who loves ALL DOGS and has no issues with any breeds, just ignores her if she tries to round him up, so because he doesnt react she soon stops.

However Codie does still like to herd and try and capture things....














Yep above she is herding up a large 'moon'!

But Milo who has collie in him can also show herding tendancies but I always stop him with dogs that he doesnt know as I understand it can be unsettling for them.
Again it all comes down to showing consideration for others doesnt it and understanding your dogs needs... sadly it seems , as we all know on here too well, a lot of numpties simply just dont bother to put the effort in.

Codie comes for a holiday with us every year and she is fine . You just have to keep an eye on her incase she tries to herd and stop her, but you do recognise the signs.

Not all collie owners are inconsiderate... like with any other breed and their owners , you just get a few that are .. and sadly they give the rest a bad name.

I have a friend who has an impeccably well behaved collie I've only ever had problems with one    As you say it's all down to the owners because the dog's just doing whats in his/her nature the owner has to tell the dog what he/she is doing wrong!  Just like greyhounds chasing things   (Something I have spent many hours training mine not to do and still don't let them off the lead in case)

I know exactly what people mean about 'collie-isms' staring, herding, fancy footwork and exuding brain-power and my two often get in the face of unknown collies however .... I can only stand, admire and daydream about the dog-handling skills of a man living near us with a gorgeous bc. The dog is the epitome of obedience, rarely on-lead, swims in the sea and displays a ton of calming signals to my two Also my friend has a lovely bc (in the photo)a truly gentle dog and a friend to my two on group walks at the beach

The only reason I'm laughing is because the Greyhounds and Lurchers that come on the Whitlodge walks don't seem bothered by Collies or at least not by Wilson who has walked with us a few times, or the ones that charge at us when we walk through the farm ( with the owners permission) these Leicester dogs are a bit odd. My lot gave me a scare with Spaniels once when two appeared from nowhere on the sand dunes when we were on holiday. They took off after them but they all enjoyed a game of chase me round the sand dunes and came back. My late Molly didn't like Spaniels and chased one all over the place once , no harm was done but the Spaniel was left in no doubt that what my old girl said went. I actually love Collies and had rescues for 25 years so it seems fitting Barty has a bit of Collie in him, can't decide if it's the clever bit or the naughty bit.

Pip isn't that overly impressed with any dogs so far although she gets on well with my mother-in-law's cocker spaniel, but I think that is because he is old and blind and no problem to her. She doesn't really like 'little' dogs, she'll have a growl if she thinks other dogs are getting too close, and there's a big shaggy old border collie/Lassie type dog who is a lovely dog, I've known of him/her for a while, but she (the Collie) really doesn't like Pip!

I'm trying to increase my own confidence with other dogs too, as well as their owners - Pip was approached by a very excitable Staff puppy at the weekend, off lead; luckily my husband made friends with the dog and reassured Pip but I don't think I would have been happy had I been alone.

Thank you to all for your replies. The first collie he barked at displays strong herding behavior with it's ball, lying flat and staring. This must be what Ryan doesn't like. I' glad I'm not the only one, I understand a bit better now so hopefully I'll be a bit more understanding with him. He really is a love, so I think I we can manage this little issue. Thanks again everyone.

Spaniels, labradors, collies......hmmm Daley doesn't like any of these either.

I didn't realise it was a universal thing, I just thought he was 'special'

Just add anything that moves too quick or gets too near without an invitation, to the mix

Billie not included, she usually just wants to play and chase them but gets all discombobulated when she discovers they can't run as fast as her don't play bitey faces lurcher style

'Here here' to that with one small exception ..... have a close look at the approaching dog if you can. These three breeds sometimes carry balls or large sticks in their mouths (sticks present a risk but obviously some owners don't know) and I've noticed that neither of my two react when the on-coming dog carries an object in their mouth. Have a look at the reaction of your own dog too - for example my dog Paddy almost always puts his tongue out as a calming signal to the other dog, if the other dog presents no risk. There is a massive amount of communication that goes on between dogs which is easy to miss.
