Hi all, can anyone please help me. I have a wonderful greyhound who In adopted back in June. He is almost perfect apart from the obvious dislike of cats. However he has suddenly decided to bark at all the border collie we see in the park and on the beach. He doesn't bark at any others, only them. He has never met one up close since I have had him, so he hasn't been upset by one, and this is recent behavior. The ones he has seen from a distance have all been playing ball and running about, but so do lots of other breeds and that doesn't bother him. Any ideas anyone, please.

Firstly welcome to Gap and to the wonderful world of greyhounds! Jet - my hound - is not keen on border collies either. No idea why and no suggestions on how to prevent it - we are just very careful when we meet them on our walks.

A lot of dogs don't like Collies, mainly because of the staring and stalking they tend to do and their stiff body language while they're doing it. One of my lurchers has collie in her, not very much but enough to exhibit this behaviour and other dogs don't like it especially when she's staring them down or lying in wait for them

Yep another one here who steers clear of Collies oh and German Shepards too. I always think its because Noel is intimidated by their sheer intelligence and organisational skills

How funny, just back from a walk in Derbyshire and a border collie came running up to us and the onlead hounds. I said to Mark, watch the dogs they don't like collies! No idea why but mine have never been keen on them apart from Willow who likes everything. Delta made a lunge at it and Trevor (who has collie in him) As Paul has said, mine aren't keen on spaniels either!

My greyhound girl Sibs is very selective about which dogs she likes (or tolerates : but one dog that she particularly detests is a sprollie.....I think its the way he 'yips'. Having said that though there is a collie that she likes and always enjoys having a good run round with.

My lot are not keen on collies, it's the stalking thing and the eyes, almost sneaky looking, plus they are very often running after a ball which is a big no no to my reactive ones. There used to be a couple which were always offlead and had nipped (bitten) several dogs, fortunately they never got near enough to any of mine although they did show their herding instinct in quite a scary way

Nice to know I'm not the only one to have collie trouble!
There's a collie that lives opposite us and my two greyhounds get really stressed out by it. The collie will try herding them and us when we are out and it causes my two to get very anxious. Even now the owner has started keeping the dog on a lead it will stare at my two and bark which scares Murphy (he hides behind my legs) and causes Mayday to get very defensive (shes usually immaculately well behaved but will bark and growl and this collie)

There is a stalking, spinning collie in our village. Her owner thinks the stalking and flashing of teeth is being friendly.... No hope really is there? She terrifies Dennis That said, I like collies, indeed we used to foster collies for Wiccaweys before Gap was born. They need mental stimulation and especially working stock can easily go off the rails if bored and misunderstood. Emma x

Yep, same here. Toby hates collies or anything that looks like one, if he sees one in the distance he gets into his I'm a big fierce dog so don't mess with me mode, though in the two and a half years he's been with us he's never actually bitten one and once we have gone past he goes back to normal and never looks back at them.

Mine too especially Charlie as eye contact really spooks him Also I find collie owners tend to be completely oblivious about their dogs anti-social habits and let them carry on J xx

Our Tess has a great deal of collie in her. Whilst she isn't spinny or bouncy she does do the stalky thing sometimes and does have a habit of getting other dogs backs up. She's not keen on other collies either!

In ten years I have not met many greyhounds who do enjoy collies company. They usually manage to live alongside them happily once they are use to their behaviour but out and about as many have said collie ie and stalky behaviour tends to send them into trip out mode. Likewise moreso mine dislike spaniels and their all time favourite hate is rude black labradors.

Yep we hate rude black labradors but worst is that they usually come with a gun-dog-handler Wannabee who has the slip lead for the dog in his hand and no *****ing collar round the dogs neck .. and does it recall??? Like hell it does so there's a bit of dancing while he tries to get his dog back, mine are saying 'come over here if you think you're hard' and I'm discussing the Dangerous Dogs Act loudly with expletives at the owner ..... happy dog walks J x
