Can anyone set my mind at rest about muzzles for greyhounds... A lady I know has started to muzzle her dog on walks because the naughty cats who live locally have been teasing him. That's fine and sensible but he is wearing a nylon fabric muzzle which doesn't seem to give him any option but to breathe through his nose so he can't pant or open his mouth. Is it just because I'm used to seeing basket muzzles on greyhounds that it looks uncomfortable or are there good reasons to use these instead of the nylon ones? Tina

IMHO they are evil and should only be used by/at vets for difficult dogs . Baskerville muzzles are made to fit all sizes and shapes of dog - similar to the breezys but more substantial and widely available in pet shops like p@h and on line .

Please tell this lady to get a basket type muzzle so the dog can pant properly and drink.
'Husher' muzzles are awful, if her dog got offlead, it wouldn't survive 'cos it couldn't open it's mouth and would probably do alot of damage trying to get the damn thing off.
Point her in the direction of Gap for the breezy muzzle or Ebay or one of the many websites that sell hound muzzles. Or P@H as Vicky has said for a Baskerville.

Totally agree with the others AND i've known dogs to still be able to bite through these horrible fabric ones (that'll probably convince her more than being kind ot the dog ) J x

Is it feasible to lend her a spare basket-type, just so she can see how much better they are?
Agree on all said with the fabric ones. The vet put one (at my request) on my border terrier many years ago as he was a little sod on the vet table. He still managed to bite the poor vet nurse's face, bad enough to leave a mark.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I have contacted the lady, with a bit more authority than just not feeling quite happy about it, and there's now a basket type on order! The suggestion to lend her one was a nice one. Thanks again x

Good for you Tina I hate those things and refuse to use them at work. In Summer the dogs overheat because they can't pant properly Helen x
