Sorry, that some of what follows is rather explicit, but I'm really worried about the dog and know nothing at all dogs giving birth and I've only done it once myself! My friend has a bitch that is expecting puppies(they are due any day according to the date given by the vet). When we were there on NYE her waters seemed to have broken/be leaking - the dog's tail was sodden and when she got up after lying on the floor there was a small amount of clear fluid left behind - maybe a tablespoon after 30 -45 minutes lying there. The male was very interested in her, licking and trying to mount her but she was fighting him off with vigour. The bitch was not off her food, which my friend took as a sign that labour was a way off. Today there are still no puppies, my friend says that there is 'discharge' and that she thinks the 'plug' has come away because of the thicker discharge. The dog is apparently panting a lot, but my friend has lost her thermometer so cannot take the dog's temperature. When I suggested (thinking that panting could be because of a temp/infection as well as labour) that she ring the vet, my friend said that if the bitch was 'still hanging on' after the weekend, she would consult a vet. Knowing nothing about dogs giving birth I am really worried. I know that there is no way a woman would be allowed to go so long after her waters started to leak before she gave birth because of the risk of infection. Can someone please set my mind at rest, is my friend right to be so laid back and nature will just take its course? Thanks!

Can she not ring the vet for advice?? Is it a litter to obviously make money from so the less money spent the better? Hope the bitch is ok

Thick discharge suggests possible infection for me and 'after the weekend' is much to long to wait to find out. She could lose the bitch and the pups.
If there's nothing to worry about it's only cost her the price of the consultation and - sorry to be blunt - but if she can't afford the proper care then she shouldn't be in this position now! Not having a pop at you clairehope, I'm just worried for this poor dog.

Ring your friend and tell her to get the dog to the emergency vets. I have no experience of this but common sense tells me that the poor dog needs to be checked. As it is now the weekend not many vets are open. It is worth the money to make sure she is ok. Again not getting at you but I am very passionate about dogs and the right treatment for dogs. Hoping so much that she is ok.

If she was mine I would have had her vet checked by now usually labour is accompanied by the bitch nesting and general restlessness seems to me there could be an infection setting in especially with the loss of fluid NYE none of mine ever went off their food prior to whelping

Everything you are saying is what my gut told me, I don't feel at all 'got at' I know you are all just as passionate as me that the animal should not be left to suffer. Now I just have to take a deep breath and contact my friend!

Good luck Claire As you've said we're all only concerned about the poor dog Let us know what happens. Has she had a litter before? Does your friend have any clue what she's doing?

I'd say that is imperative a vet sees her now, tonight, no hanging about.

Have had no response so far. The bitch was originally bought as a family pet. This is her second litter - she has not had a 'season' between litters - i.e. she conceived at the first season after the first litter. Of that first litter four of the six puppies survived. Although she did see a vet during the whelping most of it took place at home. I know nothing about any of it, I am praying that the bitch is fine and it's just worry wart me

Hopefully you've had no response because she's been taken to the vet - fingers crossed.

Hope the little one is at the vets being checked and that common sense has prevailed (due to you and your concern Claire) and her owner has her spayed at the next opportunity bless the little mite.
